Keeping with tradition, Roanoke-Chowan Publications (Roanoke-Chowan News-Herald and Gates County Index) will once again feature the first cotton blooms reported in the Roanoke-Chowan area.

One such bloom has already been reported in Northampton County. On Sunday, June 20, Jacob Burgess of Burgess Farms of Conway spotted the first bloom of the season.

Cotton farmers in Bertie, Hertford and Gates counties are urged to be on the lookout for blooms in their fields. Upon discovering those blooms, call 332-7207 to report. Please leave a message (including time and date) if there is no answer.

The first reported blooms in each county will win the following:

Gates County – a one year subscription (52 issues) of the Gates County Index.

Bertie/Hertford/Northampton counties – a four-month subscription (56 issues) of the Roanoke-Chowan News-Herald.
