Christine Williams

MURFREESBORO n Christine Vaughan Williams, 74, a native of Hertford County, died June 3, 2008 at her residence.

Mrs. Williams was a usher and on the kitchen committee at Menola First Baptist Church. She retired as custodian at Chowan University.

Survivors include her sons, Cicero Williams Jr. of Newport News, Va., and Willie Stephenson of Edenton; daughters, Estelle Williams of Murfreesboro, Brenda Williams of Brooklyn, NY and Pamela King of Smithfield; 14 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at Menola First Baptist Church, Woodland, by the Rev. Johnnie Speller. Burial will be in the Williams family cemetery, Murfreesboro. Wilder’s Funeral Home Inc., Rich Square, is in charge.

Willie Peebles

CONWAY- William M. Peebles, 89, a native of Northampton County, died June 4, 2008 at his residence.

Survivors include one son, Walter Peebles of Conway; one daughter, Barbara Alexander of Somerpoint, NJ; and three sisters; Eula Everette and Inez Majette, both of Conway; and Cora Parks of Philadelphia, Pa.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Allen Chapel AME, by the Rev. Edward Sloan.

Burial will be in the Deloatch Family Cemetery.

Hertford County Undertaker, Winton is in charge.

Makayla Manning

NASHIVILLE- Makayla Manning, 1, died June 5, 2008.

Funeral services are incomplete and will be announced by H. D. Pope Funeral Home, Rocky Mount.

Joseph Lee Mabine

AHOSKIE- Joseph Lee Mabine died June 5, 2008 at Norfolk Sentara Hospital in Norfolk.

Survivors include two sons, Joseph L. Mabine Jr. of Virginia and Clifton Mabine of Ahoskie; four step sons, James, Willie, Johnnie and Albert Crumble, all of Virginia Beach; one daughter, Rebecca Mabine of Virginia Beach; one step daughter, Shirley Crumble, of Virginia Beach; five brothers, James and Theodore Mabine, both of Ahoskie, David and Leroy Mabine, both of Virginia Beach, and Thomas Mabine of Boston, Mass.; two sisters, Odessa Askew and Zenora Watford, both of Ahoskie, twenty grandchildren; and 10 great- grandchildren.

Donald Ray Jernigan, Sr.

WOODLAND- Mr. Donald Ray Jernigan, Sr., 85, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, June 6, 2008.

Mr. Jernigan was born on March 5, 1923, to the late George Perry and Susie Jernigan. He was a native of Bertie County. He graduated from Lewiston- Woodville High School and attended N.C. State University before leaving to serve his country in the U.S. Army from 1944 until the end of World War II.

Mr. Jernigan was a farmer and retired from Georgia Pacific in Conway. He was a faithful member and deacon of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Aulander, N.C.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Mary Virginia Dickens Jernigan and their four children, Blair Jernigan Britt of Rich Square, Skip Jernigan and his wife Barbara of Woodland, Ricky Jernigan and his wife Margaret of Belews Creek, and Amy Jernigan Baker and her husband Garry of Union, N.C. Pop is also survived by his 8 grandchildren, Ben Britt and his wife Christy, Tara Britt, Sarah Jernigan Lassiter and her husband Mark, Garrett Baker, Dustin Baker, Don Jernigan, Mary Catharine Jernigan and Ricky Jernigan, Jr., and one great- granddaughter, Evelyn Britt.

The family will receive friends at the Jernigan home at 528 NC Highway 305, Woodland. A memorial service will be conducted at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church on Sunday, June 8 at 3 p.m.
