EDENTON n Rachel Childs, died April 22, 2008 at Britthaven Nursing Home, Edenton.

Lelia M. Hunt
ROANOKE RAPIDS n Lelia M. Hunt, 71, died April 19, 2008 at Halifax Regional Medical Center.
A visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m. Friday in the Roanoke Rapids Chapel of H.D. Pope Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at the chapel of H.D> Pope Funeral Home, Roanoke Rapids. The family will be receiving friends at the home of her daughter, Yvonne Lyons at 405 Railroad St., Garysburg, by the Rev. Willie Peterson and the Rev. Moses Lyons. Interment will be in Oakridge Cemetery.
Charlie Savage Jr.
COLERAIN n Charlie “Sonny Boy” Savage Jr., 79, a native of Hertford County, died April 18, 2008 at Pitt County Memorial Hospital, Greenville.
Savage was a retired fork lift driver with Columbian Peanut Company. He was a member of Mt. Pleasant Missionary Baptist Church.
Survivors include daughters, Sadie Savage and Irene S. Moore, both of Chesapeake, Va., and Cynthia Savage of Colerain; one sister, Pattie Williams of Harrellsville; 14 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday at Mount Pleasant Missionary Baptist Church, Harrellsville, by the Rev. Vernon Lassiter. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Wilder’s Funeral Home, Inc., Aulander, is in charge.
Louise J. Smith
ROCKY MOUNT n Louise Johnson Smith, 70, died April 19, 2008 at Nash General Hospital.
A visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m. Thursday at the chapel of H.D. Pope Funeral Home, Rocky Mount.
Henry Bullock
ROCKY MOUNT n Henry Bullock, 66, died April 20, 2008 at Nash General Hospital.
A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday at H.D. Pope Funeral Home. A visitation will be held from 11-1 p.m. prior to service.

ROCKY MOUNT n Wendell Burgess, 79, died April 21, 2008 at Nash General Hospital.

Ulysses Cofield
MERRY HILL n Ulysses Cofield, 77, died April 21, 2008 at Three Rivers Nursing Home, Windsor.
A funeral will be conducted Saturday at Peterson Chapel Baptist Church. A wake will be held from 7-8 p.m. Friday at Gilliam Funeral Home.
Lt. Col. Lonnie Smith (Ret.)
April 10, 1936 ~ April 22, 2008
Lt. Col. Lonnie Sasser Smith (Ret.), 72, formerly of Murfreesboro, NC died Tuesday morning at Sun Bridge nursing home in Mt. Olive. He is the son of the late Mary Sasser Early. Lt. Col. Smith is retired from the US Army having served in Korea and Vietnam, where he received many commendations and medals. He was a graduate of Murfreesboro High School, Wake Forest University, and Old Dominion University with a masters in Math. After retirement, he taught math, coached tennis and cross country at Fishburne Military Academy in Waynesboro, VA.
A graveside service, with full military honors, will be held Saturday at 2 PM at Riverside Cemetery in Murfreesboro, NC with the Rev. Frank Purvis officiating.
He is survived by cousins, Ray and Garnell Brogden, Dannie and Kaye Harrell, and Tim Harrell all of Grantham.
In addition to his mother he is preceded in death by his grandparents, Rev. and Mrs. Lonnie Sasser of Murfreesboro, NC and a special aunt, Addie Sasser Brogden of Grantham.

William D. Bunch
AHOSKIE – William D. Bunch, a native of Bertie County, died April 21, 2008 at his residence.
Survivors include two brothers, Sherman Bunch of Ahoskie and Hayward Bunch of
Philadelphia, Pa.; and six sisters, Julia Bunch, Willie Mae
Bunch, Bernice Brewington and Annie Gray Gilliam, all of
Ahoskie, Ruth Bunch and Creecy Wilson, both of Philadelphia, Pa.

Sara Joyner
AHOSKIE – Sara Joyner, a native of St. John, died April 19, 2008 at her residence.
Mrs. Joyner was a member of
Newsome Grove Baptist Church. She was also an Eastern Star.
Survivors include six sons, John and Tyrone Joyner of New Jersey, James Joyner of Illinois, Willie “Bae Ray” and George Joyner, both of Ahoskie, and Willis “Woody B” Joyner of Cofield; one daughter, Isabelle Roberson of Ahoskie; one brother, Jessie Futrell of Greensboro; 50 grandchildren; and 58 great-grandchildren.

Irvin F. Davis
CONWAY n Irvin Futrell Davis, 84, died Tuesday, April 22, at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital in Ahoskie. A native of Northampton County, he had been preceded in death by his parents, Luther and Dancy Davis. He was an area farmer, a member of Conway Baptist Church, and had been a Master Mason in the Pendleton Masonic Lodge No. 418 for 50 years.
He is survived by two sisters, Blannie Davis Jenkins of Wilson Mills and Marjorie Davis Joyner and her husband, Billy, of Conway; one niece, Liz Goodman; three nephews, Ernest Jenkins, John Jenkins, and Rusty Jenkins; two great-nephew, Josh Parker and Travis Jenkins; and a dear friend, Jennings Allen.
Funeral services will be held Friday, 2:00 P.M. at Bridgers Funeral Home, Inc. in Conway with Rev. Willie McLawhorn presiding. Burial will follow in the Davis Family Cemetery near Conway.
The family will be receiving friends at the funeral home, Thursday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. and have requested that flowers are welcomed or memorial gifts can be made to Pendleton Masonic Lodge No. 418.
Thomas Purvis
HAMILTON – Thomas Jefferson Purvis died April 22, 2008 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital, Ahoskie.
Purvis attended Martin County Public Schools.
He was a retired steel worker with Bethlehem Steel.
Survivors include one daughter, Shirley Harvey of Suffolk, Va.; one sister, Mary Ebron of Hamilton; one grandchild; and three great-grandchildren.
