Falcons top HC, eye playoffs

AHOSKIE – Bertie High School pitching allowed just two hits Friday afternoon.
Courtney Dunlow and Andrea Dunlow combined to toss five innings of two-hit softball and led the Lady Falcons to a 12-1 win over archrival Hertford County.
The victory allowed Bertie to finish 9-3 in the Northeastern Coastal Conference and 14-8 overall while dropping the Lady Bears to 2-15 overall and 0-12 in the league.
Bertie opened the scoring with one run in the top of the first frame.
Jody Mizelle singled and eventually scored on a wild pitch to give the Lady Falcons a 1-0 advantage.
BHS added six runs in the top of the second stanza. Courtney Dunlow, Chelsea Dunlow, Sandi Todd and Kelly Cummings each had RBI-singles for Bertie while Courtney Perry and Mizelle both scored on wild pitches, leaving the Falcons ahead 7-0.
In the top of the third, the Lady Falcons added four additional marks.
Whitney Castelloe laced a two-run single while Holly Cowand and Terri Lynn Smith each had a run-scoring single as Bertie built an 11-0 advantage.
Hertford County scored its only run in the bottom of the fourth frame. Amber Matthews doubled, stole third and scored by stealing home on a rundown.
Bertie scored again in the top of the fifth inning when Courtney Dunlow came around on a wild pitch.
The Lady Bears threatened in the bottom of the fifth when Brittany Odom delivered a two-out single, but a groundout ended the game.
The contest ended the season for the Lady Bears.
Bertie advanced to the 3-A state playoffs for the fourth consecutive season after finishing second in the league and first in the 3-A division. They will host a playoff game on May 13. An opponent and time has yet to be determined.
