MURFREESBORO n Savannah Wyche “Banner Lou” Smith, 72, a native of Sunbeam, Va., died March 28, 2008 at her residence.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church of Murfreesboro by the Rev. Robert Richardson. Burial will be in Wilder’s-Cherry family cemetery, Aulander. Wilder’s Funeral Home, Inc., Rich Square, is in charge.

Mrs. Smith was a member of St. Paul Baptist Church, Sunbeam, and retired from Whitley Bar-B-Que Restaurant in Murfreesboro.

Survivors include a daughter, Geneva Smith of Washington, D.C.; sons, Richard Leon “Smiley” Smith of the home and Arthur Lee Smith of Washington, D.C.; sisters, Josie Mae Rawlings of Windsor, Va.; brothers, John Thomas Hill of Newport News, Gilbert Hill and Albert Hill, both of Franklin; and two grandchildren.

Wilkins Newsome

COMO – Wilkins Lee Newsome, a native of Northampton County, died March 28, 2008 at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center.  

Newsome was educated in the Northampton County School

System.  

Survivors include his mother, Marion Newsome of Como; one daughter, Veronica Little of

NJ; four brothers, John Newsome of Murfreesboro, Ivan Newsome Jr. and Irving Newsome of Winston-Salem and Nash Newsome of Charleston, SC; and four sisters, Priscilla Lee and Phyllis Gnatt, both of Winston-Salem, Sylvia Everette of Como and Bessie Pierce of Winton.

A funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday at Zoar Missionary Baptist Church by Rev. Millard S. Newsome.  Burial will be in Carver Park Cemetery.

Lorraine W. Brown

MAPLETON – Lorraine W. Brown, a native of Princess Anne County, Va., died March 28, 2008 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital, Ahoskie.

She was a member of Wactor Temple AME Zion Church. She was a retired teacher for Norfolk Public Schools and a member of the Retired Teachers Association, AKA Sorority, Superintendent of Sunday School, Sunday School Teacher, Deaconess, Financial Secretary, Treasurer, on the Board of Trustees and the Board of Trustees for Wactor Gardens..

Survivors include a son, Charles Whitehurst of Virginia Beach; one daughter, Aminah T. Abdul-Khabir of Mapleton; two sisters, Lillian Wilson and Sadie Turner, both of Virginia Beach; seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Jeremiah Marrow

ENFIELD n Jeremiah Marrow, 83, died April 1, 2008 at Halifax Memorial Medical Center, Roanoke Rapids.

Gertrude B. Godfrey

SUNBURY – Gertrude Bunch Godfrey, 87, a native of Perquimans County, died March 31, 2008 in Albemarle Hospital. She was the widow of Johnnie Johnson Godfrey.

Mrs. Godfrey was a retired seamstress at Supak in Elizabeth City and Don Juan Mfg. in Hertford, she was a member of Corinth Baptist Church.

Survivors include a son, Kermit Lee Godfrey of Sunbury; and three grandchildren;

and nine great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday in Sandy Cross Baptist Church by the Rev. E. Vernon Gilmer Jr. Burial will be in the family plot located behind Corinth Baptist Church in Elizabeth City and will be officiated by the Rev. David Turner. Miller Funeral Home, 304 Main St., Gatesville, is in charge.

Earline W. Lewis

NORFOLK, Va.

– Earline W. Lewis, a native of Ahoskie, died March 28, 2008.

Mrs. Lewis was received her educational training in the public schools of Hertford County. She was co-owner of Custodial and Messenger Service and retired after 25 years. Mrs. Lewis was a member of Mount Lebanon Baptist Church, where she was a member of the Pioneer and Hicks Memorial Clubs.

Survivors include seven daughters, Bonita Stancil, Babylon Ward, Belysa Smith, Linda Spruill, Vanessa Rogers, Lisa Person and Donna Winborne; one brother, James R. White; sister, Hazel L. White; 19 grandchildren; and 12 great- grandchildren.

A homegoing celebration will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday in Mount Lebanon Baptist Church with Pastor Bobby A. Bowser. Interment will be in Roosevelt Memorial Park, Chesapeake. Graves Funeral Home is handling the arrangements. www.gravesfuneralhomeinc.com.

Cathrine Skinner

WILLIAMSTON n Cathrine Spivey Freeman Skinner, 70, a native of Bertie County, died March 28, 2008 at Pitt Memorial Hospital, Greenville.

Mrs. Skinner was a nursing assistant.

A funeral will be conducted at 12 noon Saturday at Mt. Ararat Baptist Church, Windsor, by the Rev. Pastor Evora Rodgers. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery, Windsor. A visitation will be held Friday from 7 to 8 p.m. Cherry’s Funeral Home, Windsor, is in charge.

Armazie Thompson

LEWISTON n Armazie Thompson, died March 31, 2008 at her residence.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Weeping Mary Baptist Church, Lewiston, by the Rev. Johnnie Cofield. Interment will be in the church cemetery. Reynolds Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie, is in charge.

She was a member of Weeping Mary Baptist Church.

Survivors include four brothers, Samuel and Daniel Thompson, both of Philadelphia, Pa., Morris Johnson of Ewing, NJ, and Melvin Johnson of Washington, D.C.; one sister, Jenette Ruffin of Rich Square; and one grandchild.

Thomas Gillam III

WINDSOR n Thomas Gillam III, 84, a native of Windsor, died March 31, 2008 at the Heritage Hospital, Tarboro.

A memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at St. Thomas Episcopal Church by the Rev. Joseph Cooper. The family will receive friends at the Parish House from noon until 2 p.m. also on Saturday. Memorial gifts may be made to St. Thomas Episcopal Church Restoration Fund, 302 South Queen Street, Windsor, NC 27983. Walker Funeral Home is in charge.

Gillam was a member of St. Thomas Episcopal Church where he was very active. He served as docent at Hope Plantation and was a World War II Army veteran, where he fought in the Battle of the Bulge. He graduated from Hargrave Military Academy and East Carolina University. He taught history at Bertie High School and substituted in other local schools after retirement.

Survivors include great nephews and cousins.

Martha O. Ray

AULANDER n Martha Ann “Dinah” Outlaw Ray, 70, a native of Hertford County, died April 1, 2007, at her home.

Mrs. Ray was a member of Ahoskie Free Will Baptist Church, Ahoskie.  She was employed as a QA Specialist with Kerr-Berry Plastics of Ahoskie for over 25 years.

Survivors include her husband, William E. “Bud” Ray; a daughter, Marsha R. Perry of Colerain; three sons, Ricky Edward Ray of Gates, William Anthony “Tony” Ray of Kelford, and Randy Woodson Ray of Conway, two sisters, Linda Outlaw and Marion Minton, both of Aulander; a brother, Harold Outlaw of Aulander; and 13 grandchildren.

A celebration of life service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at Ahoskie Free Will Baptist Church with the Rev. Philip Tipton.  Burial will follow in Job Cemetery, Aulander.  The family will receive friends at Garrett Funeral Home-Ashley Chapel from 7 until 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, and other times at the home.  Flowers are welcome or memorial donations may be made to University Health Systems Hospice Care, P.O. William Smallwood Jr.

RICH SQUARE – William “June” Smallwood Jr., 74, a native of Northampton County, died March 28, 2008 at Albemarle Hospital, Elizabeth City.

Smallwood was a member of Branches Chapel Baptist Church, Rich Square and retired from New Rochelle School System as a supply distributor.

Survivors include his mother, Otelia Smith and stepfather, Henry Smallwood; daughters, Renee Smallwood Williams of Newport News, Va., Brenda Dawson of Maryland, Patricia Smallwood Jordan of Washington, D.C., Sandra Hopkins of Danbury, CT and Wanda Blakely, also of Danbury; a son, William Bernard Smallwood of Newcastle, DE; a sister, Diane White of

Rich Square; a brother, Joseph Smith of Mt. Vernon, NY; 11 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Ethelyn R. Willoughby

CONWAY n Ethelyn Ricks Willoughby, 95, of Conway, died Tuesday, April 1, at Heritage Hospital, Tarboro, NC. For the past 14 years, she was a resident of Golden Living in Tarboro.

Born October 30, 1912, she was the daughter of the late Henry Grady Ricks and Betty Futrell Ricks.

She attended Louisburg College and was a charter member of the Conway Woman’s Club. She was a lifetime member of the Conway Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, W. Robert Willoughby, sisters, Cleo Overby, Betty Porter, brother, Grady V. Ricks and son-in-law, Frank O. Freuler.

She is survived by a daughter, Betsy W. Freuler of Tarboro and a son, W.R. (Bob) Willoughby, Jr., and wife, Diane of Virginia Beach, VA. Grandchildren, Bobby Freuler and wife, Linda of Tarboro, NC, Ben Freuler and wife, Kay of Warrenton, NC, and Kimberly W. Harper and husband, Gage of Virginia Beach, VA. Great grandchildren, Logan and Landon Harper. Sisters, Mary R. Davis of Severn, NC, and Meredith R. Flythe of Potecasi, NC, and many nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be Thursday, April 3, 2008 from 1 to 2 p.m. at Bridgers Funeral Home in Conway, NC. Graveside services will follow at the Conway Cemetery. The Rev. Julian E. Thompson of Tarboro, NC, will officiate.

Zyonnah N. Peebles

AHOSKIE n Zyonnah Nibrea “Yanna” Peebles, five weeks old, infant daughter of Monica Simmons of Ahoskie and D’Truan Peebles, died April 1, 2008.

Zyonnah was a native of Hertford County.

Other survivors include her brother, Dorian Peebles of Ahoskie; grandparents, Marvin and Gwendolyn Simmons Jr. of Ahoskie and David and Gloria McKennon of Rich Square; and great-grandmothers, Estelle Flythe of Murfreesboro and Annette Peebles of Portsmouth.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at New Life Ministries Church, Winton, by Pastor Denise Hardy. Wilder’s Funeral Home Inc., Aulander, is in charge.
