WINTON – Hertford County will be providing emergency food and shelter funds throughout the county.

During Monday night’s meeting of the Hertford County Board of Commissioners, Office on Aging Director Linda Blackburn announced the receipt of a $12,368 grant from the Emergency Food and Shelter National Board Program.

The Emergency Food and Shelter Board Program is a federal program administered by the United States Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency.

It is intended to supplement and expand on-going efforts to provide shelter, food and supportive services.

This year’s appropriation of $153 million nationally brings the total distributed to more than $3.1 billion over the program’s 25-year history.

Blackburn said the local board, which she chairs, will distribute the $12,000 among programs in Hertford County that provide emergency food and shelter after advertising the receipt of those funds.

Commissioner Curtis A. Freeman made a motion to approve the advertisement with Commissioner John E. Pierce offering a second. It passed without objection.

In other business, the board:

* left open a seat on the Juvenile Crime Prevention Council because no one has applied for the post;

* approved an update to the Solid Waste Plan;

* granted a request from the Choanoke Area Development Association (CADA) to provide funding for the IDA Program;

* tabled a request from the Tri-County Airport Authority to provide funding for a grant to expand the runway until someone from the Authority appeared before the board;

* heard an update from Commissioner Dupont L. Davis concerning on-going legislation in the North Carolina General Assembly;

* gave approval to a revised Memorandum of Understanding for the Peanut Belt Rural Planning Organization; and

* held a closed session under G.S. 143-318.11 (a) (3).
