Barbara J. Boyd
PORTSMOUTH n Barbara Jean Boyd, 69, of the 200 block of Jacquelyn Drive and formerly of Eure, NC, passed away Wednesday, February 20, 2008 in her residence. She was an active member of Cool Spring Baptist Church in Eure where she was a former Sunday School director.
She is survived by a daughter, Teresa L. Dorcsis and husband Frank of Chesapeake; a son, Colon T. Stewart and wife Michele of Portsmouth; three sisters, Sandra Christensen of Suffolk, Nancy Daniels and Joann Cooley, both of Rice, VA; a brother, Wilson Tolbert of Ocala, FL; ten grandchildren, Shelly, Bobbie Jo, Jenny, Ashley, Josh, Kelly, Kacee, Kendall, Amanda and Christopher and their families; and eighteen great-grandchildren. Her husband, Edward Boyd, and a son, Howard E. Stewart, both preceded her in death.
A funeral will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, February 23, in Sturtevant Funeral Home, Portsmouth Blvd., Chapel, by Mr. Ray Stewart. Burial will be at 3:30 p.m. in Cool Spring Baptist Church Cemetery, Eure, NC. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Friday from 7-9 p.m.

Henry C. Stephenson
CHESAPEAKE – Henry C. Stephenson, 71, a native of Northampton County, died February 19, 2008.
Stephenson retired as a longshoreman and was a member of St. Mark Missionary Baptist Church, Portsmouth.
Survivors include his wife, Geraldine H. Stephenson; two daughters, Sophia E. Moore and Jacqueline S. Barron; two sisters, Liz Branch and Elma Hardy; and three grandchildren.
A funeral was conducted Friday from St. Mark Missionary Baptist Church by Bishop Curtis E. Edmonds. Interment will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens. Corprew Funeral Home, Portsmouth.
Hattie C. Riddick
GATES – Hattie Mae Cross Riddick, 93, died February 18, 2008.
A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Sunday in Gates County High School. Stallings Funeral Home, Gatesville, is in charge.
Mary E. Deloatch

Treva Paugh
CORAPEAKE n Treva Mary Davidson Paugh, 74, a native of Wellsville, Kansas, died February 18, 2008 at Sentara Obici Hospital, Suffolk, Va.
A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday at the chapel of Miller Funeral Home, 304 Main Street, Gatesville. Friends may join the family in the funeral home following the service and all other times at the residence.
Mrs. Paugh was a homemaker and a Baptist by faith. She was also an assistant manager at Southern Pine MPH.
Survivors include her husband, Leslie Dee-Wayne Paugh Sr.; two daughters, Lorrie May P. Coats of Belton, Texas and Lois Ellen P. Osteen of Mesquite, Texas; six sons, Leslie DeeWayne Paugh Jr. of Little Rock, AR, Louis Edward Paugh of Montana, Milton Lynn Paugh, Lyle Allen Paugh and Jody Lee Paugh, all of Mesquite, and Thomas Dustin Paugh of Corapeake; two sisters, Nita D. Robbs fo Baldwin, KS and Nancy Jane Courter of Edgerton, KS; one brother, Samuel T. Davidson of Platte City, MO; several grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.
Odelle C. Eley
MURFREESBORO n Odelle C. Eley, 83, a native of Hertford County, died February 21, 2008 at Chesapeake General Hospital.
A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Mt. Sinai Baptist Church, Como, by Minister Ernestine Hill. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Hertford County Undertakers, Winton, is in charge.
Survivors include one daughter, Muriel Hope Eley of Murfreesboro.
Harvey D. Bonsack
NEW BERN n Harvey D. Bonsack, 78, died February 20, 2008 at his residence.
A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at Olive Branch Cemetery, Portsmouth, Va. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #2514, 5 Butler Rd., New Bern, NC 28560. Cotton Funeral Home & Crematory is in charge.
Bonsack was a member of Millennium Pentecostal Holiness Church, Aulander. He served his country in the U.S. Air Force and was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Disabled American Veterans.
Survivors include three daughters, Teresa Manning of Rapid City, SD, Geri Westray of Newport News, Va., and Sheryl Fulcher of New Bern; one son, Sonny Bonsack of San Luis Obispo, CA; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Nell G. Joyner
MURFREESBORO n Nell Greene Joyner, 82, died February 21, 2008 at Pitt County Memorial Hospital, Greenville. She was the widow of Harry Dunn Joyner.
A graveside funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at Riverside Cemetery, Murfreesboro, by the Rev. David Foster. The family will be receiving friends at Bridgers Funeral Home, Inc., in Conway, Saturday from 7 to 8:30 p.m.
Mrs. Joyner was a homemaker and a member of Meherrin Baptist Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Carol Joyner Dickens of Murfreesboro and Debbie Joyner Francis of Newsoms, Va.; one son, Jerry Joyner of Franklin; eight grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
James W. Jenkins
SCOTLAND NECK – James William Jenkins, 83, a native of Northampton County, died February 21, 2008 at the Roanoke Chowan Hospital.
Jenkins worked as a carpenter until retirement.
Survivors include his wife, Jessie Mae Jenkins of Woodland; and his daughter, Patricia Ann Rodriguez of Burlington.
A graveside services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Hall-Rogerson Cemetery in Aulander, by Pastor Marie Jones. The family will receive friends anytime at the home of Jessie Mae Jenkins, Woodland Onley Apartments, Apt. 105, Woodland. Sykes Funeral Service, Rich Square, is in charge.
Ernest E. Ward
RICH SQUARE n Ernest E. “Skin” Ward, 61, a native of Northampton County, died February 21, 2008 at his residence.
A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Willow Oak AME Church by the Rev. James Baker. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Wilder’s Funeral Home, Inc., Aulander, is in charge.
Ward was a member of the Young Men’s Club and last employed as a food service supervisor at the Department of Corrections in Tillery.
He is survived by his wife, Verna Ward Ward of the home.
Dena Futrell
HERTFORD n Dena Futrell, 72, a native of Gastonia, died February 21, 2008. She was the widow of Elton P. Harrell Jr.
A celebration of Life will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday at Parr Funeral Home and Crematory. Interment will be at Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens, Suffolk. Mrs. Futrell owned Dena’s Beauty Salon. She attended New Vision Community Church in Currituck.
Survivors include two sisters, Janice Kiser of Crouse and Pat Senter of Lincolnton; her children, Wanda Norris of Roseboro, Larry Futrell of Birmingham, AL, Teresia Thorne of Elberon, Genia DePriest of Newport News, Tommy Bowman of Elizabeth City, and Juanita Howard of Hertford; 10 grandchildren; and 26 great-grandchildren.
Kenneth Beatty
WELDON n Kenneth Elias Beatty, 49, of Weldon, died February 21, 2006 at his residence.
