River Center escaped flood water

WINDSOR – Water threatened the Roanoke-Cashie River Center again this week, but did not enter the facility.
Facility Coordinator Neil Moye said water reached within 12 feet of the building, which has been flooded in the past, but did not make it.
“We have some trees down in the wetlands area and the Farmer’s Market was cancelled during the storm, but overall we made it through without any major losses,” Moye said.
The Farmer’s Market is held each week at the River Center and will continue Saturday on its regular 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. schedule.
The only other disruption of service from the facility is the weekly pontoon boat rides which did not take place last week and cancelled this weekend as well.
“We want the docks to dry out and let the water settle,” Moye said.
Even though the waters of the Cashie didn’t cause damage to the Center, Moye said the staff had the facility better prepared than in the past.
“We were a lot more prepared this time,” he said. “We moved all the exhibits up stairs, pulled the pontoon boat out of the water and did a lot of prep work. All of the electronics and everything were moved. Water would have to have reached waist high to damage any of that.”
Moye said he had not been able to check for damage along the entire course of the boardwalk behind the facility because some of it was still under water.
The greenhouse on the property and the new Farmer’s Market building both survived without any issues.
The Roanoke-Cashie River Center interprets the natural and cultural history of the lower Roanoke River region. It is located on the Cashie River and has a primary exhibits building, exhibit outbuildings on the grounds and a boardwalk and boat ramp.
Moye said he was appreciative of everyone who had called or stopped by to check on the condition of the facility.
