WINDSOR – Albert M. Bond, 71, died November 17, 2007.

A funeral will be held at noon Thursday in St. Francis Missionary Baptist Church. Gilliam Funeral Home is in charge.

David S. Whitehurst

BELVIDERE -The Rev. Dr. David S. Whitehurst, 86, died November 16, 2007, at his residence.

Whitehurst was pastor of First Baptist Church, Roduco, a member of Meridian Lodge No. 18 and Memorial Missionary Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Florence Wheaton Whitehurst of the home; two daughters, Paulette Forman and Atvanna Mitchell; sons, David Whitehurst Jr., George Whitehurst, Leon Whitehurst, Richard Whitehurst and Lilton Whitehurst; a sister, Florence Gould; 20 grandchildren, 41 great-grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

A funeral was conducted Wednesday in Memorial Missionary Baptist Church, Elizabeth City, by Dr. Roosevelt Askew, pastor and the Rev. Virgil Corprew, eulogist. Burial will be in Memory Gardens Cemetery, Elizabeth City. Stallings Funeral Chapel, 202 Church St., Gatesville, was in charge.

Catherine Benton

WOODLAND n Catherine Woodley Benton, 71, a native of Portsmouth, Va., died November 17, 2007 at Norfolk General Hospital, Norfolk.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Jerusalem Baptist Church, Woodland, by the Rev. George Jarman. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Wilder’s Funeral Home, Inc., Aulander, is in charge.

Mrs. Benton was a member of Jerusalem Baptist Church, Woodland.

Survivors include a son, Curtis Benton of Asheville and Anthony Benton of Woodland; daughters, Christal Giddens of Columbia, SC, Frances Long of Jackson and Brenda Benton-Murrell of Woodland; brothers, Willie Cannady, James Cannady and Alvin Cannady, all of Portsmouth; 19 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

Leslie Pope

MURFREESBORO n Leslie Paige Bittle Pope, 67, a native of Nansemond County, Va., died November 19, 2007. She was the widow of Nathan Nathaniel Pope.

Mrs. Pope was a member of Holland Baptist Church, Holland.

A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Riverside Cemetery, Murfreesboro. The family will receive friends at Massey Funeral Home, Jackson, Friday from 7 until 8:30 p.m. and other times at the home. Memorial contributions may be made to The American Cancer Society.

Survivors include her daughters, Leslie Pope Albertson of Lewiston, Gloria Anne Woodard of Murfreesboro and Stella Marie Smith of Como; her son, John Hamilton Pope of Elizabeth City; her stepson, George Pope of Seaboard; two sisters, Mary Moore of Chesapeake and Mildred Edwards of Suffolk; a brother, William Bittle of Elizabeth, Penn.; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and one stepgranddaughter.

Albertia Veale

LEWISTON n Albertia Cherry Veale, 71, a native of Windsor, died November 15, 2007 at Nash General Hospital, Rocky Mount.

A funeral will be conducted at 12 noon Saturday at Mt. Olive Missionary Baptist Church, Lewiston, by Dr. James Jones. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Wilder’s Funeral Home, Inc., Aulander, is in charge.

Mrs. Veale was a member of Mt. Olive Missionary Baptist Church and a housewife. She was also a Childcare Provider.

Survivors include her husband, James Otis Veale Sr.; a son, James Otis Veale Jr. of Kelford; daughters, Donte Veale Corey and Chelsea Veale, both of Lewiston and Carolyn Patricia Veale of Raleigh; sisters, Lucy Martin of Orange, NJ and Mamie Ward of Atlantic City; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

L. Corbett Hand III

BETHESDA, Md. n LeRoy Corbett Hand III, Commander, USN retired, 62, a native of Roanoke, Va., and raised in Gatesville, died November 17, 2007 at his home.

Hand was a Navy veteran and a successful entrepreneur, businessman and author of myriad of government and commercial articles in the field of information and communications systems.

A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday in the Gatesville United Methodist Church. Burial with full military honors will follow in the Gatesville Cemetery. Friends may join the family for a reception in the church social hall following the committal rites. Recognizing his dedication to fund raising efforts to cure cancer and his service on the finance committee of the Lombardi Cancer Center at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C., the family asks that in lieu of flowers, contributions to that center be sent to his residence at 8606 Bradley Blvd., Bethesda, MD 20817 where they will be presented a memorial service to be held at a later time. Miller Funeral Home, 304 Main St., Gatesville, is in charge.

Survivors include his wife, Linda G. McClure; three children, April Hand-Cameron, LeRoy C. Hand IV of Taneytown, MD and Melinda McClure of Bethesda; his mother, Iris Langston Hand; three sisters, Linda Hatcher of Durham, June Robertson of Virginia Beach and Tara Ruberg of Tampa, FL; two brothers, Ted Hand of Charlotte and Dean Hand of Raleigh; and five grandchildren.
