North Raleigh sweeps Ahoskie

RALEIGH – North Raleigh Post 297 swept Ahoskie American Legion Post 102 in a doubleheader Sunday afternoon.
North Raleigh won the Senior American Legion contests by counts of 9-2 and 10-3.
In the first game, Ahoskie was held to four hits in Raleigh’s 9-2 win.
Post 102 opened the scoring with a run in the top of the first frame.
Travis Ellis singled before Daniel Merritt was hit by a pitch. Both advanced on a sacrifice by Eli Spruill.
Ellis then scored on a Kyle Horton sacrifice fly to make it 1-0 in favor of Ahoskie.
North Raleigh responded with two runs in the bottom of the first to take a 2-1 lead.
They added a run in the second, another in the third and two in the fourth to secure a 6-1 lead.
Post 102 scored again in the top of the fifth frame.
Brad Miller doubled and scored on a Mitchell Godwin RBI-single to cut the deficit to 6-2.
Post 297 added two runs in the bottom of the fifth and scored another in the sixth to secure the 9-2 final.
Tyler Pryor tossed three innings for Ahoskie. Miller and Dakota Young also pitched.
In game two, North Raleigh scored five times in the first inning and never looked back, claiming the 10-3 win.
Post 297 built an 8-0 lead through four innings before the visitors got on the board in the top of the fifth frame.
Cody Cahoon and Tyler Burden were each hit by a pitch. Ellis then drew a walk to load the bases. Cahoon scored on a bases-loaded walk to Merritt.
Burden and Ellis then came in on a two-run single by Spruill as Ahoskie closed within 8-3.
North Raleigh promptly added a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning to secure the final score.
Judson Smith started for Post 102 while Marvin Harrell and Spruill also pitched.
Ahoskie had 10 hits in the doubleheader. Spruill and Horton had two hits each to lead Post 102.
Ahoskie dropped to 0-5 with the loss.
They will play at Wilson Saturday with the first pitch set for 5 p.m.
