WINDSOR – Hunters beware; motorists rejoice.

The laws in Bertie County regarding hunting over roadways will soon change, along with the law on fishing and trapping.

After October 1, it will become illegal for anyone, including property owners, to use a firearm or bow and arrow on, across or over the roadway of any road, street or highway.

Lt. Timothy Hardy with the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission told the Roanoke-Chowan News Herald, &uot;What the old law did was if you were the property owner or the lessee of the property such as a hunting club, they were allowed to hunt from the road, shoot across the highway and so forth. This law has done away with that and now no one can do it.&uot;

In addition, written permission must now be obtained from the property owner before anyone can hunt, fish, or trap on that land.

The written permission must also contain complete contact information for the landowner or lessee.
