MURFREESBORO – Sometimes “good enough” is just that.

Chowan University’s women’s soccer team played just well enough to win Saturday and win they did, defeating Coker College 2-0.

“We played fine,” third-year Chowan coach Georgina Donnelly said. “We didn’t play the best we’ve played all season, but if you play well enough to win, that’s what is important.”

The Hawks got up early on visiting Coker Saturday when sophomore Ashley Bradford found the back of the net in the 31st minute of play.

The goal was Bradford’s fourth this season, including an overtime game-winner last week at Mt. Olive College.

While keepers Tiffany Lee and Jackie Stepp were busy keeping Coker off the board, Chowan got another goal in the second half.

This time it was sophomore sharpshooter Clara Danzeisen who scored in the 56th minute, giving the Hawks all they would need to grab their second consecutive victory.

Donnelly said she was pleased with the midfield play of both Danzeisen and senior captain Stephanie Montague. She also got a solid effort from sophomore defender Erin Jackson.

“We knocked the ball around pretty well, but we didn’t play quick enough,” Donnelly stressed. “Still, it’s always nice to get a win even when you don’t play that well.”

The Hawks did get senior captain Melissa Rodgers back on Saturday. She played 80 minutes and suffered no ill effects from a lingering hamstring injury.

This week’s slate will give the Hawks their toughest matches to date when they travel to Barton College tonight (Tuesday) before coming home for a match with the University of North Carolina – Pembroke on Saturday.

“We have a tough week ahead of us,” Donnelly said. “Fortunately, we were able to get out of Saturday with no injuries and that’s certainly a positive.”
