The Roanoke-Chowan News-Herald offers these salutes for the month of July 2007:
* Whitley Arvis, Michael Meyers, Prisilla Lunsford, Madison Warren, Alexis Baker and Brittany Lancaster, winners of the American Legion Essay contest;
* Whitney Joi Sessoms, the winner of the “People Helping People” $10,000 scholarship from the State Employees Credit Union Foundation;
* Lindsey Bridgers and Shirley Lee Spruill, who were awarded the Bill Bridgers Scholarship;
* The Murfreesboro High School class of 1945 who celebrated their graduation 62 years later;
* Army Pvt. Whitney L. Babb who completed basic combat training at Fort Jackson, SC. She is a graduate of Gates County High School;
* Kia Askew Settles of Colerain, who graduated from East Carolina University with a master’s degree;
* Joshua Freeman of Colerain, who attended the Institute for Future Agriculture Leaders at North Carolina State University;
* Dr. Harold Mitchell who received an official commendation after retiring from the Director’s Council of Roanoke-Chowan Hospital;
* Northampton-East student Jordan R. White of Pendleton who was named to the National Society of High School Scholars;
* Mike Patterson, who was named Police Chief in Aulander;
* Frances Harrell of Aulander, who was the winner of an Atlantic Ocean cruise in the Lucky 7-7-07 contest;
* R.G. Willis who was named Sergeant with the North Carolina Highway Patrol and assigned to Troop A, District II in Ahoskie;
* The Aulander and Millennium Firefighters and EMTs who were honored by the local Ruritan Club;
* Members of the Bertie, Gates, Hertford and Northampton county boards of elections who were sworn in during July;
* Adam Lee Wade of Conway who graduated from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington;
* Students at Northeast Academy who achieved Honor Roll status;
* Lynn Moore who was named Rotarian of the Year by the Murfreesboro Rotary Club;
* J. Brabban, who was recognized as outgoing president by the Murfreesboro Rotary Club;
* Marvin Mizelle of Ahoskie, who won top honors in the five-axle sleeper class at Virginia’s Truck Driving Championships;
* Annette Eubanks who was named Regional Long-Term Ombudsman for the Mid-East Commission Area Agency on Aging;
* Erin Coburn who received a Master of Physician Assistant Studies degree at Eastern Virginia Medical School ;
* Cathy Davison who was named Town Administrator for Murfreesboro;
* B’Hive and Flowers by Wayne, who held their official ribbon cutting in Jackson;
* The 730th Quartermaster Battalion, who returned home from 15 months’ deployment;
* Lucy Coulbourn and Elizabeth “Sis” Gillam Hall who were named Artist of the Month by the Bertie Arts Council;
* Jo Revelle Murray, Matthew Byrum, Suvetra Bland and Keli Martin who were awarded college scholarships by the Ahoskie Kiwanis Club;
* Students from Ahoskie Christian School who were named to the Honor Roll list; and
* Tydreke Powell who was named the Reggie Wiggins Male Athlete of the Year.
