The storms that passed through the Roanoke-Chowan region Thursday afternoon caused damage to homes and led to power outages in Northampton County.

According to Northampton County Emergency Management Coordinator Tim Byers, a home on Jackson Bypass Road was struck by lightning.

Byers said some damage was done to the home, but fire crews were able to respond quickly. The lightning reportedly struck the home near a chimney.

“It was not as bad as it could have been,” said Byers.

In the western end of the county straight line winds caused storm damage at a couple of homes in Gaston and Henrico.

Byers said half of the roof on mobile home located on Huey Street in Gaston, near Northampton County High School-West, was torn off during the storm.

In Henrico, damage was caused when several trees were uprooted and struck a house and a car.

Byers said Thursday was a busy day for emergency crews in the county.

“We had fire departments, law enforcement, EMS answering calls, removing limbs and trees,” he said.

As of Friday morning, Byers said there were 693 reports of power outages, mostly on the western end of the county.

No injuries were reported.
