AHOSKIE – The 2006-2007 All-Roanoke-Chowan Soccer Team has been released.

For the first time since its inception, the All-Roanoke-Chowan Soccer Team includes both males and females who play the sport.

The change became necessary when there were only two schools playing in varsity competition this year. Those two schools were Hertford County High School and Ridgecroft School.

Since there is traditionally an All-Roanoke-Chowan girl’s soccer team because there have been three schools, the News-Herald Sports Department decided to recognize both boys and girls this year in the hopes of having an All-area team for each of them individually after the 2006-07 season.

The females selected to the 2006-2007 All-Roanoke-Chowan Team are:

* Hayes Bryant, Ridgecroft n a forward who was named All-Coastal Plains Independent Conference, All-Region, All-State and was the CPIC Player of the Year;

* Kristen Cayton, Ridgecroft n a midfielder, who was named All-Coastal Plains;

* Ashley Davis, Hertford County n a goalie who was named the team’s Most Valuable Player;

* Cecelia Jones, Hertford County n a midfielder who was All-Northeastern Coastal Conference;

* Michele Lewter, Hertford County n a defender who was named All-Northeastern Coastal Conference;

* Bardin Murray, Ridgecroft n a defender;

* Jo Revelle Murray, Ridgecroft n a defender; and

* April Piland, Ridgecroft n a defender who was All-Northeastern Coastal Conference and All-State.

The boys that were selected to the team include:

* Richard Burns, Hertford County n a midfielder, who was named All-Northeastern Coastal Conference and was the team’s Most Valuable Player;

* Matt Byrum, Ridgecroft n a defender;

* Travis Ellis, Hertford County n a goalie who received the team’s coach’s award;

* Jordan Harrell, Hertford County n a midfielder;

* Chris Hill, Ridgecroft n a forward who was named All-Coastal Plains Independent Conference, All-Region and All-State;

* Evans Jones, Ridgecroft n a forward who was named All-Coastal Plains Independent Conference and All-State;

* Matthew Jones, Ridgecroft n a defender; and

* Josh Morris, Ridgecroft n a midfielder who was named All-Coastal Plains Independent Conference.

Those who received Honorable Mention were Bryan Britton, Hanes Joyner and Ethan Phelps of Ridgecroft.
