ST. GEORGE, Utah – Bertie High School graduate Christie Brown had one of two hits for Pitt Community College here last Thursday.

Brown, who along with high school teammate Holley Cowand, plays softball for Pitt Community College, helped lead the Bulldogs offensively in the opening round of the National Junior College Athletic Association World Series.

The Bulldogs were seeded number 16 heading into their first NJCAA World Series and drew top-ranked Salt Lake Community College. The number one seed downed Pitt 8-0 in five innings.

“The final score doesn’t provide a true picture of the game,” said PCC Head Coach Junior Bailey. “It was really 4-0 going to the sixth with two more chances to battle back, but once it got to eight, it was over by rule and there were no chances to come back.

“A couple of plays there, if we finish those plays, we’re still playing ball and we’ve got the meat of our order coming up,” he added.

Salt Lake CC scored one in the first inning, two in the fourth and five in the fifth to secure the win. Jordyn McDonald picked up the pitching victory for the Bruins.

On the Pitt Community side, Brown checked in at 1-for-2 for the Bulldogs while Amy Godley was 1-for-1.

Those were the only two hits for Pitt Community.

“I feel pretty good about how our team measured up,” Bailey said. “The final score of 8-0 was not a really a true reflection.

We stayed with them throughout until we made a few bad plays in the fifth. Give them credit, though, for being aggressive with the bats.”

The Bulldogs moved on in the double-elimination tournament to meet Seward Community College of Kansas.

In that contest, the Bulldogs held a 2-1 lead until the seventh inning when Seward tied it. The number nine seed then went on to eliminate Pitt 5-2 in eight innings.

Pitt scored in the top of the fourth frame when shortstop Elizabeth Massey scored on a passed ball. They took the lead in the fifth on a double by Casey Mitchell. She scored Cowand, who had walked.

Seward rallied back with a run in the seventh and three in the eighth.

Massey led the Bulldogs going 2-for-4 while Mitchell was 1-for-3 with an RBI. Brown was 0-for-2 with a walk and Cowand was 0-for-1 with two walks.
