SOUTHERN PINES – This year both football and basketball teams from Northeast Academy have had to go to overtime.

This week it was their golf team that found themselves tied after regulation.

After playing themselves into fourth place at the conclusion of Monday’s round of 18 holes, Northeast battled back Tuesday to tie for second with Cresset Christian.

The tie forced a playoff where all six players from each team played one hole. The top four scores for each team were tallied to determine the winner – lowest score take all.

“We felt like we didn’t want to finish tied; we wanted second or third place,” said Northeast’s Ryan Davis. “It wasn’t a lot of pressure on us, but we did fell some pressure.”

The Eagles lost the playoff by one stroke, but still secured third place with a score of 630. Wayne Christian took the title with a combined score of 608.

“We still had a good season regardless of our finish at states,” said Davis.

Northeast went undefeated in the regular season and finished second at the Tarheel Independent Conference (TIC) tournament two weeks ago.

Course conditions were good according to Davis, but the course did differ from those players in the Roanoke-Chowan area are used to playing and required some adjustments.

“From tee to green the course isn’t a lot different from the courses we’re used to playing,” Davis explained. “When you get to the green it’s hilly and slopping and we’re used to greens that are flat.”

Three players from the TIC found themselves in the top 10 after two days of competition, earning spots on the All-State team.

Northeast senior Drew Pinnix claimed fourth place, shooting a 73 on the first day and putting a par 72 on day two for a 145.

Lawrence’s Marshall Ellis had a 148 after two days, earning fifth.

Davis, the TIC player of the year, shot a 149 to take seventh.

“It was a good feeling to make all state but a little disappointing because the team comes first,” said Davis.

“It says a lot about our team to have two people make it,” Davis continued.

The Eagles Justin Barnes finished just out of the top 10, shooting a 156, good enough for thirteenth place.

Other area golfers competing at the states included the Eagles’ Parker Brown, Will Allen and Brodie Harrell.

Sam Mitchell and Randy Davenport represented Lawrence Academy and Ridgecroft School’s Win Joyner and Virginia Lane also competed.
