AULANDER – The cause of a fire at Liverman’s Recycling remains undetermined.

Bertie County Interim Emergency Management Coordinator Misty Deanes said the fire began at approximately 4:30 p.m. Sunday and continued to burn until approximately 1 a.m. Monday.

Deanes said the fire in the fluff stack of the Recycling Center resulted in seven departments being called to the scene. They included Aulander, Lewiston-Woodville, Millennium, Kelford, Roxobel, Ahoskie Rural and Murfreesboro. The North Carolina Forestry Service and Bertie County Sheriff’s Office were also on hand.

“Everyone worked well together as a team to get the fire under control,” Deanes said.

Deanes said an employee of the center stayed on site all night to make sure the fire did not rekindle.

The fluff, Deanes explained, is a pile of material that is left over after automobiles are recycled. She said it was all non-metal from the vehicles and had some metal mixed in as well.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
