Waymore R. Lassiter
SUNBURY – Waymore Reubin Lassiter, 91, a native of Gates County, died January 30, 2007, in Chesapeake General Hospital.
Lassiter was a member of Damascus Christian Church, he had retired in June 1983 after 20 years as the maintenance supervisor of the Gates County Public Schools. He was an Army veteran of World War II, he served with an engineering division in the European Theatre.
Survivors include his wife, Nellie Taylor Lassiter; two daughters, Judy L. Holland of Suffolk and Barbara L. Jones of Sunbury; three granddaughters; and four great-grandchildren.
A funeral was conducted Friday in the chapel of Miller Funeral Home, 304 Main St., Gatesville, by the Revs. Forrest Guthrie and Garrett Lewis. Burial followed in Damascus Christian Church Cemetery, Sunbury.
Chriss L. Bond
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. n Chriss Lindale Bond, 49, a native of Bertie County, died January 28, 2007 at Mary Immaculate Hospital.
A funeral will be conducted at 12 noon Saturday at Greater Wynn Grove Baptist Church, Colerain, by Bishop Thomas E. Lee. Burial will be in First Baptist Rich Square Church Cemetery, Rich Square. Wilder’s Funeral Home, Inc., Aulander, is in charge.
Bond was a member of Greater Wynn Grove Baptist Church. He was employed with Carolina Cylinders in Hampton.
Survivors include his wife, Faye Spivey Bond of the home; a son, Torres L. Bond of Newport News; his parents, Bennie and Mary Bond of Colerain; a brother, Bernard Bond of Raleigh; and a sister, Vickie Bond of Raleigh.
Nellie Gunn
JACKSON n Nellie Y. Gunn, 95, a native of Cottendale, Fla., died January 30, 2007 at Hampton Woods Health and Rehabilitation Center, Jackson.
A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at Seventh Day Adventist Church, Murfreesboro, by the Rev. B.C. Williams. Interment will be in Phillips Cemetery, Seaboard. Faison’s Funeral Home, Inc., Seaboard, is in charge. A viewing will be held from 2-7 p.m. Saturday.
Pauline May
ROCKY MOUNT n Pauline Carr May, 70, died January 28, 2007 at Nash General Hospital.
A funeral will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at the Chapel of H.D. Pope Funeral Home, Rocky Mount.
Selma Cowart
AHOSKIE n Selma Virginia Flanagan Cowart, 81, a native of Martin County, died January 31, 2007 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital. She was the widow of John L. “Jim” Cowart.
A visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. at Hubert C. Baker Funeral Home in Savannah, GA, with a vigil service at
6 p.m. Mass of Christian burial will be conducted at 10 a.m. Monday at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church by the Rev. Jeremiah McCarthy. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens. Remembrances: Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, 1003 E. Victory Dr., Savannah, GA 31405. Bridgers Funeral Home, Inc., Conway, is handling local arrangements.
Mrs. Cowart was retired from the Tupperware Corporation and was a Communicant of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church and a member of the Senior Citizens Center.
Survivors include a brothers, Albert B. Flanagan of Murfreesboro and Franklin Flanagan of Ahoskie; and her sisters, Rebecca Ann Brown of Colerain and Retha Carter of Como.
Thelma Vinson
Thelma Chitty Futrell Vinson passed away in Williamston, NC, on January 31, 2007. She was born in the village of Menola located in Hertford County, NC, in 1914 to James Frank Chitty, Sr. and Hettie Blowe Chitty.
She was devoted to her family and spent her formative years mastering the arts of home making, cooking, caregiving, sewing, crocheting, and quilting. She practiced these arts with a twinkle in her eyes the remainder of her life.
She was happily married for thirty seven years to Jason Futrell. They loved children and shared that love with children of their own choosing. After his death she married James Vinson, Sr. and became an instant mother and grandmother. They were married for thirty one years.
Her survivors include her stepchildren, James Vinson, Jr. and his wife, Faye; Lensey E. Vinson and his wife Sue, all of Conway; seven grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She is also survived by children of her heart, Betty Theodorakis, Ronald Howell, Jeff Futrell, Lynn Warren and their families.
Memorial services will be held at Murfreesboro Baptist Church, Murfreesboro, NC, on Sunday, February 4 at 3 p.m. Memorial donations may be made to Murfreesboro Baptist Church in lieu of flowers. Bridgers Funeral Home in Conway, NC, is providing services.
Hazel B. Vaughan
AHOSKIE – Hazel Elizabeth Bailey Vaughan, 81, a native of Bronx, NY, died Wednesday, January 31, 2007, at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital.
Mrs. Vaughan was a member of Liberty Free Will Baptist Church.
Survivors include two daughters, JoAnne V. White and Joan M. Icenogle, both of Ahoskie; and three sisters, Ruth A. Barry and Marion F. Olensky, both of Somerset, NJ, and Betsy Caruso of Basking Ridge, NJ.
A celebration service of Mrs. Vaughan’s life will be conducted at 1 p.m.
on Monday at Liberty Free Will Baptist Church by the Rev. Paul Ange.
Burial will be in Highland Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends at Garrett Funeral Home, Ahoskie, from 7 until 8:30 p.m. on Sunday and other times at the home.

Pernaria Williams
NEW YORK n Pernaria Cherry Williams, 77, a native of Lewiston, died January 26, 2007 in New York.
Mrs. Williams was a homemaker.
A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Springhill Baptist Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Cherry’s Funeral Home, Windsor, is in charge.
James Michael Pugh
Mr. James Michael Pugh, 52, of 3161 Everett Rd., Everett, died Wednesday, January 31, at Martin General Hospital.
Funeral services will be held Sunday, 2 p.m. at St. Mark Church in Everett, N.C. Burial will follow in Robersonville Memorial Garden. Visitation will be from 7-9 p.m. Saturday at the church.
Antonica Cherry preceded him in death.
Survivors include his wife, Odessa Keel Pugh; his father, James S. Pugh of Lewiston, NC; his children, Roslyn Pugh, Avery Pugh, Michael Shoulders, Demeco Richardson and Keisha Cherry.
Also, nine grandchildren; three sisters, Olivia P. Barnes, Valerie Williams and Sharon Willis; three brothers, Ronnie Pugh, Darryl Pugh and Horace Pugh; his in-laws, Jasper and Mamie Keel; and other relatives and friends.

Mildred E. Riddick
GATES n Mildred E. Riddick, 81, a native of Gates County, died February 1, 2007 at Down East Health and Rehab, Gatesville.
A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Monday at First Baptist Church, Gates, by the Rev. John Felton. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Hunter’s Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie, is in charge.
She was a member of First Baptist Church Gates.
Survivors include four sons, Benjamin Riddick and Blaine Riddick, both of Gates, Charles Riddick of Waterbury, Ct., and Willie M. Riddick of Richmond, Va.; five daughters, Virginia Harris of Gates, Patricia Lamison of Richmond, Ella Alston and Deborah Sweat, both of Hampton and Michelle Riddick of Pittsburgh, Pa.; and a host of grandchildren.
Wilma Chamblee
AHOSKIE n Wilma D. Speller Chamblee, 82, a native of Bertie County, died January 30, 2007 at the residence of her daughter in Jamaica, NY.
She was a member of Berean Bible Baptist Church,
St. John, pastor’s aide member and church kitchen member. Her past employment included beautician, seamstress at Carolina Garment Factory, food service manager at General Hospital, security officer at Eastside High School and Dale Avenue School.
Survivors include her children, Lucille Standifer of Seaside, CA, Barby Lovely of Patterson, NJ, Joe Willie Eason of Riversdale, GA, Wilma Diane Council of Fayetteville, Carolyn Ann Bonaparte of Jamaica, NY, and Ronnie Bridgers of Patterson, NJ; sisters, Lucille S. Hunt of Aulander and Zenobia Tomlinson of Ahoskie; 12 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at St. John 2nd Baptist Church, Ahoskie, by the Rev. Michael Benford. Burial will be in the Hunt family cemetery, St. John. Wilder’s Funeral Home, Inc., Aulander, is in charge.
Clarine Pierce
COFIELD n Clarine Pierce, died January 31, 2007 in Jamaica Queens, NY.
A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Mt. Pleasant Church, Harrellsville, by the Rev. Robert Lewis. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Reynolds Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie, is in charge.
