Helen H. Harrell
COFIELD n Helen H. Harrell, 93, a native of Hertford County, died February 10, 2007 at Guardian Care Nursing Home.
A funeral will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. Sunday at Philippi Baptist Church, Cofield, by the Rev. Clark. Burial will be in the church cemetery. A viewing will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Saturday at Hertford County Undertakers Chapel, Winton.
Survivors include a son, Hallett Harrell Jr. of Washington, D.C.; a daughter, Juanita H. White of Berlin, MD; two grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Patricia Hicks
MANHATTAN, NY n Patricia Hicks, 59, a native of Hertford County, died February 8, 2007 at Calvary Hospital.
A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at Parker’s Grove Baptist Church, Murfreesboro, by the Rev. Fernando E. Temple Sr. Burial will be in the Eley-Bishop family cemetery. Hertford County Undertakers, Winton, is in charge.
Survivors include her husband, Claudie Hicks; her father, Paul Dewie Eley; two children, Melvin A. Hicks of Raleigh and Mark L. Hicks of Manhattan; a daughter, Tanisha L. Hicks of Queens; three sisters, Lina Gatling of Murfreesboro, Annie Eley of Norfolk, Va., and Hattie Harden of Cleveland, Ohio; and 11 grandchildren.
Danny S. Terrell
HICKORY n Danny Steve Terrell, 42, formerly of Battleboro, died February 12, 2007 at Frye Regional Medical Center.

William Councill Jr.
GATES n William Thomas Councill Jr., 86, a native of Handsome, Va., died February 12, 2007 at Sentara Obici Hospital, Suffolk. He was the widower of Mary Lee Burton Councill.
A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday in Reynoldson Baptist Church by the Rev. Billy Presley. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Friends may join the family from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday in Miller Funeral Home, 304 Main St., Gatesville, and all other times at the residence.
Councill was a retired painter and home repair contractor. He was a member of Sunbeam Baptist Church, former member of Gates Volunteer Fire Department and attended Reynoldson Baptist Church.
Survivors include a daughter, Faye Councill Edge of Wilson; a son, Tommy Councill of Gates; two sisters, Julia C. Sledge of Alexandria, Va., and Nelda C. Hayes of Suffolk; three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and two step-grandchildren.
Joseph Luther Gay
SEVERN n Joseph Luther Gay, 88, died Monday, February 12, at his home near Severn. He had been preceded in death by his wife of 51 years, Mary Lee B. Gay, by his parents, Joseph O. and Daisy E. Gay and by two sisters, Eleanor G. Brigman and Ollie G. Helkowski.
A native of Northampton County, he was a farmer, and was a dedicated member of Sharon United Methodist Church where he served as superintendent of Sunday schools for 45 years. He was a founding member of the Severn Volunteer Fire Department, a charter member of Valley Pine Country Club, was a member of the Severn-Pendleton Ruritan Club for many years and during World War II. He served in United States Army.
Survivors include one daughter, Jonell Gay Little and husband, David of Severn; one granddaughter, Beth L. Clements and husband, Brandon of Gasburg, Va.; two sisters, Margaret G. DeLoatch of Chesapeake, Va., and Jessie G. Sanders of Tucson, AZ; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, February 15, 2:00 p.m. at Sharon United Methodist Church with Rev. Austin Anderson and Rev. Sid Collins presiding. Burial will follow in the Severn Cemetery.

Rufus G. Jones
SUNBURY – Rufus Glenn Jones, 83, a native of Gates County, and formerly of Sunbury, died February 9, 2007, in Granville Medical Center, Oxford.
Jones was a former employee of Norfolk Naval Shipyard, he had attended Oak Grove Christian Church.
He is survived a brother, Norman Earl Jones of Vacaville, Calif.
A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday in the chapel of Miller Funeral Home, 304 Main St., Gatesville, by the Rev. E. Vernon Gilmer Jr. Burial will be in the Powell family cemetery, Folly Road, Sunbury.
Mary A. Early
FAIRFAX, Va.- Mary Kathlyn Ainsley Early, 93, formerly of Powellsville, N.C. passed away on February 12, 2007. She was born in Cherry, Washington County, North Carolina on April 29, 1913. The daughter of Haywood McClellan and Hester Ann Woodley Ainsley, Mary K. was raised in Oak City, North Carolina. She graduated from Woman’s College of the University of
North Carolina in 1934, with a major in Home Economics. She taught Home Economics in high school until 1940, when her first child was born. In 1938 she married Melvin Thompson Early, Sr. and they made their home in Cremo, Bertie County, North Carolina. They celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary in 1988. She was a Wife, Mother and Homemaker until her children were in school. She then worked for Roanoke Chowan Hospital from 1960-1975. Mary K was a devoted, active leader in the Powellsville Baptist Church for more than 50 years.
Surviving family member include her daughter; Montie Early Pakowski of Greenville, N.C., son; Melvin Thompson Early, Jr.(Thomas) and his wife Mary of Burke, Va., daughter; Brenda Early and husband Michael Appel of Easton, MD, son; Haywood Ainsley Early (Woody) and wife Pam of Richmond, Va. Mary K’s grandchildren include Marie McIntosh, Laura Pakowski, Paul Pakowski, Veronica Pakowski, Kim Drake, Brian Early, Rachel Early, Rebecca Early, Jake Early, and Caroline Early. She has 10 great grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild and many extended family members and friends.
Other survivors include: a niece, Mary Ann Ainsley Hutchinson, and her daughters, Raynor Dahlquist and Maricar Hutchinson; brother-in-law Carlton Early and wife May; sister-in-laws, Doris Cowan and husband James, Ruby Early and Janie Early.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Melvin T. Early, Sr.; her parents, Hester and Haywood Ainsley, her brother; Ira C. Ainsley, and her son-in-law; Lawrence P. Pakowski, Sr.
Funeral services will be held 11:00 A.M. Saturday, February 17, 2007 at Powellsville Baptist Church with Rev. Ed Davis officiating, with burial in Highland Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friend at Garrett Funeral Home 205 N.C. Highway 42 West Ahoskie, N.C. from 7-8:30 P.M. Friday, February 16, 2007. In lieu of flowers, the family request that donations be sent to Powellsville Baptist Church, P.O. Box 5, Powellsville, N. C. 27967.

Henry Powell
HAMILTON n Henry Powell, 85, formerly from Ahoskie, died February 9, 2007.
A funeral was conducted Monday at Hamilton Baptist Church by the Rev. Brian Bush. In lieu of flowers, family request donations to Hamilton Baptist Retirement Home or the Hamilton Volunteer Rescue Squad.
Powell served as Director of Missions for 40 years in five Baptist Associations throughout NC.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Hancock Powell; five children, Pat Powell of Tampa, FL, Bob Powell of Colfax, Jane Sadler of Oxford, Nancy Clemmons of High Point and Mary Ruffing of Ahoskie; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandson.
Collin Boone
LITHONIA, GA n Collin Boone, 66, a native of Murfreesboro, died February
6, 2007 at DeKalb Medical Center.
A viewing will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. Sunday at Hertford County Undertakers Chapel, Winton. A graveside service will be conducted at 12 noon in Carvers Park, Murfreesboro.
Survivors include three daughters, Pam Bebthea of Georgia, Janice Boone Deloatch and Torey McGraw, both of New York; five sons, Collin Boone Jr. of LA, Andra Boone of Virginia, Glen Boone, David Diles and Micheal Diles, all of New York.
Arthur L. Majette
AHOSKIE n Arthur Lee Majette departed this life on February 12, 2007 in Norfolk Sentara Hospital, Norfolk, Va.
Mr. Majette was born in Bertie County to the late Arthur J. Majette and Sallie Eason Majette.
He is survived by his wife, Verlene B. Majette; two daughters, Melodie M. Kelly of Durham, NC and Nicole M. Enyinnaya of Greenville, NC; one grandson, Joel Enyinnaya; one sister, Pauline M. Johnson of Arlington, Va.; and two brothers, Joe C. and Charles Majette of Aulander.
Mr. Majette was a retired medical assistant with the State of North Carolina Division of Prisons. He also was a photographer, taking pictures of weddings etc.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, February 17, 2007 at 11 a.m. at St. John 2nd Baptist Church, St. John, NC.

Richard Bunch
AHOSKIE n Richard Bunch, 79, a native of Bertie County, died February 13, 2007 at Brian Center, Windsor.
Bunch was a member of Conoconary Baptist Church, Aulander. He was a self-employed plasterer.
Survivors include one daughter, Barbara Bunch of Ahoskie; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Conoconary Baptist Church by the Rev. Alton Edwards. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Wilder’s Funeral Home, Inc., Aulander, is in charge.
Walter Yellordy
ROANOKE RAPIDS n Walter Yellordy, 54, died February 9, 2007 at Halifax Regional Medical Center.
A visitation will be held from 12 noon to 2 p.m. Friday with the service beginning at 2 p.m. in the Roanoke Rapids Chapel of H.D. Pope Funeral Home by the Rev. Terry Hopkins. Interment will be in Susan B. Ivory family cemetery, Roanoke Rapids.
William Baines
GATESVILLE n William Story “Bill” Baines, 79, a native of Gatesville, died February 14, 2007 at Brian Center, Hertford. He was the widower of Betty Ann Riddick.
A funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Friday at Gatesville Baptist Church by the Rev. Gene Asbill. Private interment will follow in the Gatesville Cemetery.
Friends may join the family Thursday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in Miller Funeral Home, 304 Main St., Gatesville and all other times at the home of his daughter, 502 High St. Memorial contributions may be made to the building fund of Gatesville Baptist Church, in care of Janet Mizelle, 291 US 158 West, Gatesville, NC 27938.
Baines was employed with the Gatesville Service Station for 21 years, he sold the station in 1970 and was a salesman for the Chevrolet and Ford automobile dealerships in Sunbury for 27 years before retiring. He was a faithful member of Gatesville Baptist Church.
Survivors include a daughter, Deborah Lee of Gatesville; two sons, William S. “Billy” Baines Jr. of Kill Devil Hills and Robert Alan “Bobby” Baines of Hobbsville; a sister, Jean B. Blanchard of Hobbsville; and three grandchildren.
