ASKEWVILLE – Bethel’s Kayla Overton had two big baskets Tuesday night.

The senior scored her 1,000th career point early in the contest, but her biggest hoop of the night came with eight seconds to play in overtime to give BCA a 47-46 win over Rocky Mount Prep.

After Mindy Miller sank two free throws with 9.2 seconds to play in regulation, it wouldn’t have seemed the Lady Eagles would need overtime.

Lady Jaguar Nikki Bullock had other ideas, though, burying a three-pointer with only one tick left on the clock to deadlock the score at 41-all and the send the game to overtime.

That extra session wasn’t what veteran Lady Eagle coach Paul Ange was looking for. Having lost center Kelli Hoggard to fouls late in the contest and with starting point guard Erin Young struggling due to the effects of sickness, Ange would have sooner settled the matter in regulation.

His fears grow worse after Rocky Mount Prep got three points from Bullock to take a 44-41 lead.

“When we lost Kelli, I was really concerned,” Ange said. “We put the younger players in there and they played with all their heart.

“When we were down three points right off in overtime, I was concerned about where our offense would come from, but Mindy and Kayla came through,” he added.

After more than two and a half minutes without a score in overtime, Miller got the Eagles within one (44-43) on her hoop with 37 seconds to play. She then gave her team the advantage when she hit two shots from the charity stripe with just 28.6 seconds left.

Heidi Hobbs put the lead back in Rocky Mount’s column when she scored with 22 seconds to play.

The Lady Eagles, however, got Overton the ball and she nailed the deuce with eight ticks left on the clock, giving Bethel a huge non-conference win.

“It’s probably the biggest win of the season because the team’s effort,” Ange said. “Everybody played with such heart and played together. I’m proud as punch of them.”

The coach credited his team’s 3-2 defense with keeping Rocky Mount out of the paint for much of the night and said the defensive effort of some of his players was key.

“We had a lot of girls who didn’t score a point, but played defense the best we have all year,” he said. “We looked like a team.”

Miller did lead the Eagles offensively with 15 points while Overton and Hoggard had 13 each. Miller completed the double-double with 11 rebounds and Hoggard added nine boards. Martina Hill recorded six rebounds.

The Eagles struggled early in the contest, getting behind 8-5 after one quarter and trailing by three again when Overton jacked the three that stopped the game for Ange to present her with the game ball.

Bethel trailed 16-14 at the intermission, but rallied to take a 31-24 lead after three quarters thanks to a 9-2 run to close the period.
