ASKEWVILLE – Four players scored double figures in Bethel Christian Academy’s season-opener Friday night.
That was more than enough for the Eagles to roll past visiting TEACH as Bethel scored a 93-62 victory.
Kyle Freeman led the Eagles with 29 points during the contest while Shane Tripp chipped in 22. Daniel Feher added 19 and Kevin Johnson scored 10 as the Eagles rolled to victory.
The teams exchanged hoops over the opening few minutes of the first quarter, but then Bethel began to pull away.
Tripp and Feher hit back-to-back hoops before Michael Miller hit a triple that pushed the Eagles ahead 11-6.
TEACH rallied to close the gap back to a pair (13-11), but Tripp and Freeman each scored a three-point play to push the Bethel lead to 19-11.
The visiting squad closed the gap to seven (23-16) on a triple by Alex Bowen, a Tripp bucket as the first quarter closed gave bethel a 25-16 edge.
TEACH wouldn’t go away, however, as the visiting squad went on an 8-2 run to close the gap to 29-24 midway through the second quarter.
Bethel came back to life, however, as they went on an 11-0 spurt to pull away for good. Johnson started the spurt with a hoop and then Freeman hit back-to-back hoops before Feher added a free throw. Zach Bazemore then hit back-to-back shots as Bethel pulled out to a 40-24 edge.
Andrew Barmer stopped the spurt with a pair of free throws, but Feher and Bazemore sandwiched a pair of hoops around two freeman free throws as Bethel took a 46-28 lead into the intermission.
Bethel pull even further away in the third quarter when Tripp scored six unanswered points to put the lead over 20 (58-37), but TEACH scored the final six points of the period to pull back within 15 (65-50).
Feher started the fourth quarter with a hoop, but Josh Chandler answered for the visiting squad.
Feher, however, scored again from the free throw line moments later and started a 9-0 Bethel spurt. Freeman had four points on the run while Feher added three and Tripp two with the Eagles grabbing a 76-52 lead.
The lead didn’t change much over the next few minutes until the Eagles rolled off seven straight points to take an 89-58 lead.
From there, both teams emptied their benches and the home team went on to the 93-62 win.
“Overall, I was pleased,” Bethel Head Coach Tommy Tripp said. “We have six seniors and I think they had a good beginning to their senior year.
Tripp said he was pleased with the play of Feher, who had a double-double with the 19 points and a dozen rebounds and Freeman who had also had a double-double with 29 points and 10 assists.
“Defensively, I think we played pretty well,” he added. “Obviously, we’ll get a good feel for where we are Tuesday.”
The Eagles will play Lawrence Academy Tuesday at Ridgecroft School in the semifinals of the Lt. Nick Brantley Scholarship Tournament.
