WINDSOR – EastCare landed near the scene of an accident here Saturday night.

A two-vehicle accident at the intersection of U.S. 13/17 and Governor’s Road left one man pinned in his vehicle. After extrication, he was transported by EastCare to Pitt County Memorial Hospital in Greenville.

“He was fortunate because EastCare happened to be flying from Norfolk (Va.) and was almost overhead when they were dispatched,” Lt. Ricky Morris of the Windsor Police Department said. “They landed at the scene and airlifted him.”

According to eyewitness statements, the driver of a Ford Explorer was turning from U.S. 13/17 onto Governor’s Road and allegedly ran a stop light. Meanwhile, a Chevrolet Silverado was traveling south bound on U.S. 13/17 and was struck by the Explorer nearly head on.

Morris said Donald Whitehurst, 66, of Tarboro, who was operating the Silverado, was pinned in the vehicle and had to be extricated. Morris said the man had serious injuries, but was alert.

All four people in the Explorer were transported to Bertie Memorial Hospital. Morris said three of them had serious injuries.

The driver of the Explorer was Shantesha Peoples, 18, of Tarboro. All three passengers were also from Tarboro. They were 17-year-old Kevona Knight, 17-year-old Kadijah Peoples and 14-year-old Emajah Peoples.

The incident occurred at approximately 6 p.m.

Morris said charges are pending.
