ASKEWVILLE – A new town commissioner was selected literally by the flip of a coin here Tuesday.
The Bertie County Board of Elections certified the results of last week’s municipal elections Tuesday and those results left one race in a deadlock.
That race was for Askewville Town Commissioner where only one person ran for the three seats on the town board. That person, incumbent Kay Brantley, was reelected with 15 votes as was write-in choice Mike Baker, who was also an incumbent, was tabbed on seven ballots.
Tied with six vote each for the final spot were incumbent Rodney Thomas and Gloria Bryant. For Bryant, it was a position she had been in before. The daughter of the late Elbert Ray Bryant, she had sought to replace him on the town board following his death in 2004.
She ran for the seat in 2005 and finished tied for the final spot. Brantley won the seat when her name was picked out of a hat.
Tuesday, the outcome was different. Sending her mother, Martha, in her stead, Bryant was selected on the toss of a coin. Neither Bryant nor Thomas were able to attend.
“I sent my mother in my place because of work,” Bryant said. “Since Rodney couldn’t be there either, they asked her to call it. She chose heads and that’s what came up.”
Bryant said she had not anticipated being a candidate for the seat and was surprised to learn she had been named on the write-in ballots.
“I am honored that people wrote my name in and I’m looking forward to serving,” she said. “When I found out the result, I figured if it was meant to be it would work out and if not it would be okay.”
Bryant was one of several write-ins that were confirmed Tuesday by the Bertie County Board of Elections.
In Aulander, former Commissioner Bobbie Parker was certified as the winner of a seat on the town board. She received 40 votes as a write-in choice for the board. She joins Corey Balance who ran for office and was elected along with Ron Poppell, who won an unexpired term on the board.
“I haven’t been contacted at this point, but if the result was certified, I will serve,” Parker said. “I’m honored to chosen by the people of Aulander and will serve them all to the best of my ability.”
In Colerain, Mayor Burney Baker was reelected by write-in after initially not seeking office. He will be joined in the town’s leadership by Joe Morris, who won a seat on the town commission by write-in vote. Tom Waicul was also reelected as a town commissioner.
In Roxobel, former Commissioner Sammy Pruden was elected by write-in vote to return to the board.
All other results in the county were certified as well with no changes.
