AHOSKIE – It was the same story.

For the second time in two meetings this season, Bertie’s Lady Falcons jumped out to a big lead. For the second time, Hertford County rallied back, but it was too late.

The Lady Falcons improved to 4-2 inside the Northeastern Coastal Conference and kept HCHS winless in the league with a 58-47 win.

Bertie dashed out to a quick 8-2 lead behind four points from Laquetta Leary and a hoop each from Equalia Vines and Satora Swain.

Hertford County trimmed their deficit to 10-5, but the Lady Falcons rolled off eight unanswered points sparked by a Swain hoop, to jump out to an 18-5 advantage. They went on to lead 23-11 by the end of the first period.

Hertford County hung in for most of the second quarter, actually getting within 10 (27-17) after a Rasheema Speller bucket, but again the Falcons went on a run, scoring seven straight to take a 34-17 lead at the intermission.

Not much changed in the third quarter as the deficit remained the same at the end of the period.

After an exchange of hoops to open the fourth quarter, Hertford County scored nine of the next 11 points, seven of which came from Kenya Cofield. The result was the Lady Bears getting within 10 for the first time in the second half.

After a Swain hoop for Bertie, Joya Hardy hit back-to-back baskets and Cofield buried a three to get the Lady Bears within 52-47 at the 1:22 mark of the quarter.

Bertie sealed the win by hitting four of six free throws over the closing minutes.

Swain led Bertie’s offensive charge with 19 points on the evening while Vines was also in double figures with 11 points. Yashanti Bridgers, Tierra Brown and Laquetta Leary each contributed six for the Falcons.

Cofield led HCHS with 22 points followed by Hardy’s seven points and Moore’s six points.

The loss dropped Hertford County to 2-11 on the season while moving the Lady Falcons to 14-3.
