AHOSKIE – Eleven players scored for Hertford County here Tuesday night.

Five of those 11 hit double figures as the Bears secured a 90-59 first round victory over Northampton County High School n East at the Roanoke-Chowan News-Herald Holiday Classic sponsored by United Country Joe Murray Realty.

Tydreke Powell led the Bears with 18 points while Lamar Monger had 15, Patrick Downing and LaMarcus “Buck” Jenkins had 12 each and Darren Everette added 10 for HCHS.

The Bears got out of the gate with a 5-0 advantage after Jenkins hit a three-pointer and Andre Lyles scored a hoop, but Northampton rallied and eventually tied the score on back-to-back hoops by Josh Reddish and James Jefferson that made it 9-all.

From there, the Bears assumed control, scoring 11 of the next 15 points to take a 20-13 lead after one quarter. Powell led the way with six points on the spurt while Downing also scored for the Bears.

Hertford County then rolled off the first six points of the second quarter after getting buckets from Marcus Burnell and Powell and a pair of free throws from Monger.

Northampton got back within seven (29-22) when James Long hit a triple midway through the second quarter.

HCHS responded with an 11-0 run and then scored six more after a Jefferson hoop for NCHS-East to go up 46-24. Monger started the spurt with the first two hoops then Danny Dembry scored and Downing hit a three-pointer and a deuce back-to-back.

The Bears held a commanding 50-29 lead at the intermission.

The advantage for the Bears stayed at or near 10 points for the entire third quarter.

Hertford County pulled away in the fourth quarter and easily grabbed the victory.

The Bears are now in the finals of the tournament which they have won 10 times including last season. That game will be played at 8 p.m. tonight (Thursday).
