Margaret H. Johnson

Maragaret “Gene” Hines Johnson departed this earth on October 25, 2006, in the home of her daughter Becky Johnson. Gene was born December 22, 1928 in Mt. Olive, North Carolina to Eugene Harvey Hines and Ruth Hatch Hines. She grew up in Greenwood, South Carolina. She was pre-deceased by her beloved “Sister” Ruth Hines Swearingen.

She is survived by her husband James T. Johnson of Ahoskie, North Carolina and her Sister Rebecca Hines Harmon and brother Cullen Hatch Hines and sister-in-law Norma of

Greenwood, South Carolina.

She was the proud mother of three children and their spouses, James W. Lea III and wife Catherine Lea of Wilmington, North Carolina and Rebecca Lea Johnson and husband James T. Johnson Jr. and Margaret Rhett Quattlebaum and Corey Quattlebaum of Ahoskie, North Carolina and the step mother to James T. Johnson, Jr., Hugh Johnson, Mandy Johnson, Katy Lewis, and Evans Johnson.

She was “MiMi” to six grandchildren Tillery, Loftin, and Steed Johnson, Cullen Lea and Eliza and Addy Quattlebaum and step

grandchildren Lauren, Ashley, Scarlett, Jason and Michael.

Gene lived a full and blessed life. She attended St. Marys School in Raleigh and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where she excelled academically, socially and athletically. She was a Tri Delt, was on the honor roll and the May Court at both St. Marys and Carolina and in 1950 was a beauty sponsor for the annual Blue White football game amongst many other honors.

She was an accomplished artist and avid sportswoman who loved to play tennis and golf and was often seen at the pool of Coral Bay condominium at Atlantic Beach and ViQuest in Ahoskie doing water aerobics. Gene was elegant, opinionated, fun loving, loyal to her friends, and devoted to her family. She lived a spiritual and Christian life. Gene was a member of the Daughters of the King of St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Ahoskie.

Her children have made a donation to her alma mater, St. Marys School in Raleigh, North Carolina where a student activity room will be named in her honor. Gene’s life will be memorialized on October 29, 2006 at 2:00 P.M . at Saint Thomas Episcopal Church in Ahoskie, North Carolina, with a

celebration following at the home of Corey and Rhett Quattlebaum at 901 Memorial Dr., Ahoskie, North Carolina. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the St. Marys Capital Campaign, Hospice, St. Thomas Episcopal Church, All Saints Church of Atlantic Beach or All God’s Children Church in Aulander, North Carolina.

Joe Baker Jr.

CORAPEAKE n Joe Baker Jr., 65, died October 22, 2006 at Obici Hospital, Suffolk, Va.

A funeral was conducted Friday at New Piney Wood Chapel, Drumhill, by the Rev. Richard Curry. Burial was in New Middle Swamp Church, Corapeake. Stallings Funeral Chapel, Gatesville, was in charge.

Survivors include his wife, Gladys M. Baker; four daughters, Joyce Battle and Barbara Knight, both of Gates, Sharon Baker and Gladys Jones, both of Corapeake; five sisters, Betty Francis Baker and Delois Jones, both of Gates, Carrie White of Corapeake, Venora White of Suffolk and Lenora Harrell of Aulander; three brothers, James Elton Baker of Old Saybrook, Conn., Lloyd Norman of Gates and Larry Baker of Gatesville; and eight grandchildren.

Venelle Morgan

HERTFORD n Venelle Casper Morgan, 84, a native of Gates County, died October 25, 2006 in Brian Center Health & Rehabilitation. She was the widow of Ernest Elliott Morgan.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Mt. Sinai Baptist Church by the Rev. Howard Sutton. Burial will be in Holly Lawn Cemetery, Suffolk, Va. Miller Funeral Home & Crematory, Edenton, is in charge.

Mrs. Morgan was formerly employed with Planters Peanuts in Suffolk and was a member of Mt. Sinai Baptist Church.

Survivors include two stepdaughters, Carolyn M. Winslow of Hertford and Gaye Morgan of Greenville; two stepsons, Wade E. Morgan of Shawboro and John E. Morgan of Hertford; two sisters, Doris Blanchard of Hobbsville and Louise Winslow of Suffolk; a brother, Luther Casper of Corapeake; seven grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Lester R. Lane

TYNER n Lester Ray Lane, 85, a native of Chowan County, died October 24, 2006 at Chowan Hospital, Edenton.

Lane was a retired farmer. He was a member and deacon of Chappell Hill Baptist Church and served as the church custodian and grounds keeper for over 20 years.

Survivors include his wife, Faye Ward Lane; two daughters, Rose L. Byrum and Elva L. Wheeler, both of Tyner; a son, Phillip Ray Lane of Plymouth; five sisters, Clarine L. Armstrong, Geraldine L. White, Quida L. Speakman and Joan L. Haskett, all of Elizabeth City and Maxine L. Bunch of Edenton; a brother. L.H. Lane Jr. of Tyner; six grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

Chester G. Canady

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – Chester Gerald Canady, 46, a native of Norfolk, died October 25, 2006.

Canady was a tree surgeon for 20 years.

Survivors include his mother, Marie F. Canady; three brothers, Frank Canady of Corapeake, Dennis Canady and Stacey Benjamin Canady, bothof Virginia Beach; and three sisters, Judy Potter of Grandy, Melissa Canady of Windsor and Michelle Fulcher of Stacy.

A graveside service will be conducted at noon Saturday at Rosewood Memorial Park. Friends may sign the guest register book at www.mem.com.Rosewood Kellum Funeral Home is in charge.

Mable Gatling

AHOSKIE n Mable Louise Gatling, died October 26, 2006 at Guardian Care Nursing Home, Ahoskie.

A funeral will be conducted at 12 noon Wednesday at Calvary Missionary Baptist Church, Ahoskie, by the Rev. H.H. Murrill. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery. Reynolds Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie, is in charge.

She was a member of Calvary Missionary Baptist Church.

Survivors include two sons, Marnitha Gatling of Bronx, NY, and Elvert Gatling of Washington, D.C.; four daughters, Bertha Myrick of Virginia Beach, Va., Juanita Myrick of Bronx, Brenda Jernigan and Donice Holloman, both of Ahoskie; one brother, Henderson J. Myrick of Newport News; two sisters, Ella Mae Fennell of Newport News and Hattie Lee Sharrord of Goldsboro; 13 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren.

Fannie Mitchell

AHOSKIE n Fannie “Susie” Mitchell, died October 25, 2006 at Guardian Care Nursing Home, Ahoskie.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday at Calvary Missionary Baptist Church by the Rev. H.H. Murrill. Burial will be in Elm Grove Baptist Church Cemetery, Aulander. Reynolds Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie, is in charge.

She was a member of Calvary Missionary Baptist Church.

Survivors include one brother, Clayton Saunders of Ahoskie; and one sister, Algie Saunders of Virginia Beach, Va.

Alice F. Liverman

MURFREESBORO – Alice Fuller Liverman, 88, of the 100 block of Darleen St., died Friday October 27, 2006 at Roanoke Chowan Hospital Ahoskie, N.C.

She was a native of Bladen County, a member of Meherrin Baptist Church and a homemaker. She was predeceased by two husbands, Richard E, Fuller and Therrill Liverman, one son Allen Fuller, one brother, Johnnie Cain, two sisters, Mae C. Smith and Isabelle Taylor.

Surviving is one sister; Lillian C. Jackson, White Oak, N.C., one granddaughter; Shannon Fuller Ball of Ohio, three nieces; Diane Cain, and Kimberly Cain, Murfreesboro, N. C., and Grace Gaynor, South Mills, N. C.

A celebration of life service will be held at Meherrin Baptist Church, 11:00 A.M. Monday, October 30, 2006, with Rev. Billy C. Sellers officiating, burial will follow in Buckhorn Baptist Church Cemetery, Como, N.C.

The family will receive friends at Garrett Funeral Home, Ahoskie, N.C. from 7-8:30 P.M. Sunday, October 29, 2006, and other time at the home of Curtis and Louise Howard,

Mary Walton

GATESVILLE n Mary Elizabeth Baines Walton, 74, died October 21, 2006 at Union Hospital, Elton, Md.

A funeral will be conducted at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at Apostolic Holiness Church by Bishop Lewis Stokes, Bishop Robert Knight, and Pastor Virginia Ruffin. Burial will be in the Dildy family cemetery, Gates.

Survivors include her husband, Henry “Bud” Walton of the home; four daughters, Shirley M. Baines and Minnie D. Walton, both of Bronx, NY, Virginia Gadsden of New Rochelle and Della F. Boone of Portsmouth, Va.; three sons, George M. Baines, Larry E. Walton and Michael T. Walton, both of Bronx; three sisters, Ann Leary, Barbara Leary and Faye Leary, all of Boston, MA; four brothers, William Baines of Gates, Mack Leary and James Leary, both of Boston and David Leary of Raleigh; 15 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

Myrtle T. Davis

DECATUR, Ga. n Myrtle T. Davis, 89, formerly of Hertford, died October 20, 2006 at DeKalb Medical Center.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Saunders Grove Missionary Baptist Church, Belvidere. Burial will be in Cedarwood Cemetery, Hertford. Stallings Memorial Chapel, Hertford, is in charge.
