Cato L. Watson Jr.

CHESAPEAKE, Va. – Cato L. &uot;Snap&uot; Watson Jr., 66, a native of Windsor, died August 25, 2006, in his brother’s home in Chesapeake.

Watson completed his government service with the Department of Agriculture as a management analyst in Washington, D.C.

Survivors include his twin brothers, Albert and Allen Lundy; and one sister, Ruth Ann Carter.

A funeral was conducted Monday in Celestial Baptist Church, Portsmouth, by the Rev. Leon J. Boone. Burial was in Albert G. Horton Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery, Suffolk. Corprew Funeral Home, Portsmouth, was in charge.

Leander Jefferson

RICH SQUARE n Leander Jefferson, 105, died August 26, 2006 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital, Ahoskie.

Uriah Fooks Coulbourn

Uriah Fooks Coulbourn, age 89, of Windsor, North Carolina died Sunday, August 27, 2006.

A native of Suffolk, Virginia, Uriah was the son of the late Goldsborough Greenfield Coulbourn and Annie Tilghman Coulbourn.

Uriah graduated from Washington & Lee University and was a member of Kappa Alpha Fraternity.

In 1941, he moved to Windsor where he worked with his brothers in the lumber industry and became president of Coulbourn Lumber Company, Inc.

Over the years, Uriah, an Eagle Scout, was Scout Master for ten years, Chairman of Roanoke Chowan Council of Boy Scouts of America, a member of Windsor United Methodist Church, where he served as Sunday School Superintendent for 12 years, a member of the Board of the Edenton Methodist Home for Children, a member of the Board in the N.C. Conference of Higher Education, a member of the Board of Directors for the Southern Bank & Trust, a Mason and a member and past president of the Windsor Rotary Club.

Uriah had perfect attendance with the Rotary Club for the past 64 years.

Mr. Coulbourn is survived by his wife, Betty Butler Coulbourn, his daughter, Anne Coulbourn Lunsford and her husband, Philip J. Lunsford, II, their two children, Jeanne and Priscilla Lunsford of Windsor; sister, Katherine C. Edwards of Falls Church, VA; brother, William C. Coulbourn of Huntington, NY.

The family will receive visitors at 606 Taylor Street, Windsor on Tuesday, August 29th from 7:00-8:30 pm.

A Memorial Service will be held at the Windsor United Methodist Church at 3 pm on Sunday, September 10, 2006.

A reception will be held in the fellowship hall immediately following the service.

Barum Flythe

ROANOKE RAPIDS n Barum Fleetwood Flythe, 83, a native of Northampton County, died August 21, 2006 at Halifax Regional Medical Center.

A memorial service will be conducted at 4 p.m. Sunday, September 3 in the chapel of Massey Funeral Home, Roanoke Rapids.

Flythe worked as a spinner in the textile industry. He was also a veteran of the U.S. Navy.

Survivors include his sisters, Mary Virginia Britt of Newport News, Va., Bobette Rose of Roanoke Rapids and Nell Lane of Woodland; and his brothers, Edgar Lee Flythe of Roanoke Rapids and Henry Paul Butler of Newport News.

Stanley Lassiter

SEVERN n Stanley M. Lassiter, died August 24, 2006 at Halifax Regional Medical Center, Roanoke Rapids.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at First Baptist Church, Severn, by the Rev. Elijah Barnes. Interment will be in the church cemetery. Faison’s Funeral Home, Seaboard, is in charge.

Survivors include his children, Jeremy, Justin and Shayron Lassiter, all of Severn; his mother, Helen Lassiter of Severn; three sisters, Joan Deloatch of Pendleton, Janet Smith of Durham and Anita Jacobs of Severn; and one grandchild.

Richard E. Draper, Sr.

AHOSKIE – Richard Erwin Draper, Sr., 66, died Monday, August 28, 2006.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, August 30, 2006 at the Open Arms Church in Ahoskie.

Interment will follow at Sunnyside Cemetery in Scotland Neck.

The Reverend Joe Lassiter will be presiding.

Richard is survived by his wife, Helen J. Draper; daughter, Terry White Koch and husband James of Ahoskie; sons, Richard E. Draper, Jr. of Aulander and Robert E. Draper and wife Carolyn of Lewiston; sisters, Fannie Lee Gandy and husband Karl of Palm Coast, FL and Alice Rodgers of Winchester, IL; and eight grandchildren, Douglas White, Laura White, Lindsey White, Richard E. Draper, III, Steven Draper, Ryan Draper, Benjamin Draper, and Dianne Draper.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, August 29, 2006 at the Open Arms Church, 1418 NC Highway 461, Ahoskie, NC.

Galina S. Gerken

AHOSKIE – Galina Shatulenko Gerken, 88, a native of Rostov, Russia, died August 27, 2006, in Roanoke Chowan Hospital.

Mrs. Gerken was a medical doctor.

Survivors include her daughter, Irina G. Kahn of Ahoskie; a son, Father Sergios Gerken of Calistoga, CA; and three grandchildren.

Services will be conducted at St. Tikhon’s Theological Monastery in South Canaan, PA.

Garrett Funeral Home is in charge.

Clara Grandberry

AHOSKIE n Clara Mae Grandberry, died August 28, 2006 at Sentara Hospital, Norfolk, Va.

Coach Jerry Minton

Mr. Bynum Jerome “Jerry”  Minton, age 54, of Cedar Lane, Wilkesboro died August 25, 2006 at Wilkes Regional Medical Center. 

A memorial service will be held Tuesday 2:00, August 29, 2006 at Mount Pleasant Baptist Church’s new Reach Center with the Rev. Mike Hamby officiating.

Mr. Minton was born November 12, 1951 in Hertford County, NC to Frances and Dorothy Odom Minton.  He retired from the North Carolina Public School System after 30 years as a Physical Education Teacher and  Football Coach.  Mr. Minton served as head football coach at Wilkes Central High School from 1994 to 1999, assistant football coach at Bath High School, Washington High School, Bertie High School, Roxboro/Person Sr. High School.  While in Wilkes County he served as an assistant football coach at Wilkes Central High School from 1992 to 1994 and at West Wilkes High School from 1999 to 2003. 

He is survived by: his wife, Dianne Carolyn Williams Minton of the home; one sister, Ellen Patton of Oak Island, NC and one niece, Holly Knowles of Oak Island, NC.

The family received friends at Mount Pleasant Baptist Church’s new Reach Center Monday night from 6 until 8.

Odell Hurdle

BELVIDERE n Deacon Odell Hurdle, 91, a native of Gates County, died August 24, 2006 at Winthrop University Hospital, Mineola, NY.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Riddick Grove Missionary Baptist Church, Belvidere, by the Rev. Williams Sawyer. A viewing will be held at 12 noon at the Church. Burial will be in the family cemetery. Hertford County Undertakers, Winton, is in charge.

Survivors include his wife, Eva Hurdle of New York; four daughters, Virginia Brooks, Florazeoll Vaughan and Carolyn Hinton, all of Cambria, NY and Reatha Ward of Greensboro; two sons, Earnest Hurdle of Hempstead and Nurney Hurdle of Willingboro, NJ;

and two grandchildren.
