Hey Hawks fans!

Fall semester has ended at Chowan, but there is still a lot going on in the athletic department.

The Women’s Basketball team looks sharp!  They picked up two impressive wins in the last two weeks.  The first was a 62-59 win over Barton College.  Barton is a very good team, and the Hawks really had to work to seal the win against them.  It was great to see us walk away with that win, especially after losing a heartbreaker to Barton just a few weeks ago.  Revenge is sweet!

The second solid win came against UNC-Pembroke on Wednesday night.  The Hawks won 54-49, and had key performances from Talaya Lynch, and Ransheda Jennings.

Congratulations to the Women’s Basketball coach!  Coach Pat Mashuda was named CIAA Coach of the Week this week after coaching his team to a big win over Barton.

Kevin Hodrick, senior football player from CU, traveled to Atlanta, Georgia this Sunday to play in the HBCU Bowl, in the Georgia Dome.  This is a really cool opportunity!

The Men’s Basketball team headed to Florida this weekend to take on Florida Southern College and The University of Tampa. They have had a bit of a break in their game schedule; their last game was back on December 6 against Barton.  I’m sure they were ready to get back on the court, and Florida is a pretty cool place to do so!

This week, the Student Athlete Advisory Committee participated in the Secret Santa program sponsored by the Student Government Association on campus.  SAAC selected two children to provide gifts for this year.  We bought toys, gloves, hats, jeans, sweatshirts, jackets, shirts, school supplies, etc.; anything we thought they would like or could use.  This was a great opportunity for our student-athletes to give back and help make someone’s Christmas better.

The Sapphires had a successful cheerleading camp last weekend.  The camp was well attended, and the girls seemed to really enjoy interacting and learning from the CU Cheerleading Squad.  They learned cheers, dances, and performed what they learned in front of their parents at the conclusion of the camp.

We are greatly saddened over the loss of Coach Dan Surface.  Coach Surface was such a huge supporter of Chowan athletics, and he will most certainly be missed.  He was our teacher, coach, and friend, and our prayers are with his family.  Coach Surface did absolutely everything he could for CU, his loyalty and compassion is something we all can admire and strive for.

Happy Holidays to everyone.  Thanks for your continued support of Chowan Athletics.

Go Hawks!
