PORTSMOUTH, Va. – Ruth Smith, 76, a native of Greenville, died February 9, 2006, at her home in Portsmouth.

She was a member of Faith, Hope and Charity Holiness Church in Norfolk.

Survivors include her husband, Abraham Smith Sr.; six daughters, Lillie Smith-Heath and Barbara Smith Wiggins, both of Virginia Beach, Miriam Suyon Cenedese and Cathy Smith, both of Portsmouth, Mary Vilane of Durham, and Marsha Moone of Haymarket, Va.; three sons, Abraham Smith Jr. of Gates, Timothy Smith of Chesapeake and Isaac Smith of Alexandria; 14 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Hazel L. Staton

SUFFOLK, Va. – Hazel Lassiter Staton, 73, a native of Conway, died February 9, 2006, at her home.

Mrs. Staton was a member of Oxford United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women. She graduated from East Carolina University and was a teacher for 30 years in North Carolina.

Survivors include her husband, Logan Eugene Staton; daughter, Hazel Elizabeth Staton of Portsmouth; and sister, Essie Woods of Conway.

Etta Dunlow

WINDSOR n Etta Joan Wiggins Dunlow, 77, a native of Martin County, died February 12, 2006 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital, Ahoskie.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Askewville Baptist Church by the Rev. Freddie Harris and the Rev. Frank Stansbury. Burial will be in Edgewood Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Walker Funeral Home, Windsor.

Mrs. Dunlow was a member of Askewville Baptist Church and a homemaker. She was an Avon representative.

Survivors include her husband, McKensie Dunlow of Windsor; one son, Zebulon Shane Dunlow of Aulander; two sisters, Mickey W. White of Windsor and Carrie W. Moore of Williamston; a brother, Wilson Wiggins of Williamston; and four grandchildren.

Robert Peele

Robert Peele, 75, a native of Windsor, died February 10, 2006 at Pitt County Memorial Hospital, Greenville.

Peele was an electrician in several states, worked at the Navy Base in Norfolk, VA, Coulbourn Lumber Company and Lea Lumber Company in Windsor.

Survivors include his wife, Doris Peele of the home; sons, Jesse Peele of Windsor, John Peele of Windsor, Matthew Peele of Washington, DC, and Robert V. Peele of Hyattsville, MD; daughters: SSG. Savannah Barrett stationed in Kuwait, and Nancy Brown of Greenville; and seven grandchildren.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday at Wilder’s Funeral Home Chapel, Aulander, by the Rev. Frank Hyman. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery, Windsor.

Beatrice Lassiter

AHOSKIE n Beatrice Lassiter, 81, a native of Hertford County, died February 10, 2006 at Guardian Care.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at New Hope Baptist Church, Gates County by the Rev. James Brown. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Hertford County Undertakers, Winton, is in charge.

Survivors include two sons, Paul C. Lassiter of Murfreesboro and Ecliffe Lassiter Sr. of Woodland; two daughters, Carylon Maye of Springfield, Massachusetts and Patricia Shearn of Murfreesboro; one sister, Daisy E. Vaughan of Murfreesboro; 29 grandchildren; 46 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

GATESVILLE n Virginia Goodman, 52, a native of Gates County, died February 9, 2006 at Albemarle Hospital.

Leon Fennell

AULANDER n Leon “Pep” Fennell, 70, a native of Hertford County, died February 11, 2006 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital, Ahoskie.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at Menola First Baptist Church, Woodland, by the Rev. Johnnie Speller. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Wilder’s Funeral Home, Inc., Aulander, is in charge.

Fennell was a member of Menola First Baptist Church. He was a retired from the City of Hampton after 25 years of employment as a truck driver.

Survivors include his wife, Thelma Artis Fennell of the home; daughters, Gloria Fennell of Newport News, Va., Peggy Frierson of Dale City and Angelia Coston of Maryland; sons, Leon Fennell Jr., Elton Fennell, Lorenzo Fennell, Marquis Fennell and Michael Fennell, all of Hampton; brothers, Russell Fennell of St. John, Willie Fennell of Ahoskie, James McCoy Fennell of Hampton and Rudolph Fennell of Ahoskie; sisters, Eula Barnes and Ethel Barnes, both of Hampton and Queenie Britt of Murfreesboro and Vera Britt of Ahoskie; 17 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Pietro Todd

TRINITY — Pietro “Pete” D’Amico Todd, 55, a native of Gary, W.Va., died January 17, 2006 at his home.

A funeral was conducted Friday at Sechrest Archdale Chapel by Dr. Robert Ferguson. Interment was in Oakdale Cemetery in Mt. Airy. Schrest Family Funeral Care was in charge.

Todd and his wife operated A&G Grocery.

Survivors include his wife, Cornelia “Neeley” Snow Todd, formerly of Gates County; a daughter, Amanda T. Taylor of Archdale; a son, Gary D’Amico Todd of Sophia; a brother, Allen Todd of High Point; and two grandchildren.
