WINTON – Nucor Steel – Hertford and Hertford County’s Office on Aging partnered to bring some tasty holiday cheer to the older and homebound adults in the community.

Nucor and the Office on Aging partnered for the second year in a row to cook and deliver over 30 turkeys to older members of the Roanoke-Chowan community.

“It is a wonderful program,” Office on the Aging Coordinator Linda Blackburn said. “Nucor has been a great community member, especially for older adults and adults that are homebound.

“This is the second year we have partnered with Nucor,” Blackburn said. “We delivered over 30 turkeys and meals this year.”

“Nucor has supplied this kind of feast every year since we have been in Hertford County,” Nucor Steel – Hertford Vice President and General Manager Giff Daughtridge said.

“Two years ago in discussion with the staff from the Office on Aging we found out how much they went through to prepare the meals for those they serve,” Daughtridge said. “This year, the team at Nucor brought in turkey fryers and fried the turkeys on site for the older and homebound adults in the community.”

“The hardworking and generous people at Nucor are an absolute spirited group,” Blackburn added. “Allowing the Office on Aging to partner with Nucor has been such a benefit to the community.”

Nucor has been a part of the Roanoke-Chowan community since June 1998 when the company announced plans to construct a new steel mill in Hertford County.

Construction of the Hertford mill was completely in 2000 and the mill has been producing high quality steel plates since October 2000.

Earlier this year the North Carolina Department of Labor recognized the Nucor Steel plant in Hertford County as a Star site, the most prestigious award given by the Department of Labor.
