HCHS sweeps Currituck

CURRITUCK – Hertford County High School’s varsity boys remained unbeaten in league play Wednesday.

The Bears downed league foe Currituck County High School 68-26 to move to 8-0 in the Northeastern Coastal Conference and 15-3 overall.

The Lady Bears also stayed on track in the league with a 56-30 victory over Currituck.

In the varsity boys’ contest, HCHS opened the game with a dominating first quarter. They led 21-4 after the first eight minutes of play.

The visiting squad continued to pull away in the second quarter and led 44-10 at the intermission. Hertford County held a 54-17 lead after three quarters.

Jquwan Ruffin led the Bears with 17 points, six rebounds and three assists. The Bears also had two players record a double-double. Brian Beale had 16 points and 10 rebounds while Willie Bass had 14 points and 15 rebounds.

“This was a good win and happened because we had good effort from everyone,” HCHS skipper Charles Simmons said.

In the varsity girl’s contest, HCHS jumped out to a 13-2 lead and held a 24-13 edge by the intermission.

Brandi Burden led the way for the Lady Bears with a triple double. She had 18 points, 10 steals and 10 assists.

Sherniece Futrell added 14 points for the Bears and Camaryn Jones had 13.

“It was a good conference win for us and a great job by all,” HCHS girl’s coach Justin Frederes said.

The Lady Bears improved to 6-2 in the league and 11-6 overall.
