Alma E. Knight

CHESAPEAKE, Va. – Alma E. Knight, 79, a native of Gates County, died October 7, 2005, at her residence. She was the widow of George Knight Sr.

Mrs. Knight was a homemaker and a member of Grove Baptist Church Usher Board.

Survivors include four daughters, Ruby J. Smith, Ethel E. Thomas, Angela A. Thorne and Parthenia V. Knight; four sons, George H. Knight Jr., Clarence E. Knight, Melvin P. Knight and Eugene M. Knight; three sisters, Aurlene Morris, Myrtle Rawles and Dora Greene; 19 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren.

J.T. Fisher Funeral Services Inc. A life celebration service will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Thursday at Grove Baptist Church by Dr. Melvin O. Marriner. The family will assemble at 4017 Spring Meadow Crescent, Chesapeake, at 10 a.m. for the funeral. Burial will be in Middle Swamp Baptist Church Cemetery, Corapeake. Viola C. Carter

GREENSBORO n Viola Corbitt Carter, 89, a native of Green County, and formerly of Aulander, died October 9, 2005, in her home.

Mrs. Carter was a homemaker and a Baptist.

Survivors include her daughters, Reba Archambo of Hampton, VA, Janice Brown and Cathy Carter, both of Greensboro; sons, Calvin Carter of Suffolk, Vernon Carter of Grandy, Melvin Carter of Pikeville and Morris Carter of Greensboro; a sister, Essie Jones of Snow Hill; a brother, Russell Corbitt of Nahunta; 28 grandchildren and 17 great- grandchildren.

A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Thursday at Garrett Funeral Home, Ahoskie, by the Rev. Robert May.

Burial will be in Highland Memorial Gardens, Ahoskie.

The family will assemble at the funeral home at 1 p.m. on Thursday, prior to services.

Clarence L. Willoughby

AHOSKIE – Clarence Louis Willoughby, 89, of Willoughby Road, died Tuesday, October 11, 2005, in Guardian Care of Ahoskie.

Mr. Willoughby was born in Hertford County, a son of the late Walter R. and Cilla Hughson Willoughby.

He was an army veteran of WWII and was the Director of the Hertford County Civil Defense.

Clarence was a member of First Baptist Church, Ahoskie, the Davie Masonic Lodge #39 AF & AM, the Sudan Shrine Temple, Newbern, the Roanoke Chowan Shrine Club and was on the Board of Directors of the Ahoskie Rural Fire Department.

Survivors include his sister, Margaret W. Young of Ahoskie, and brothers, Milton Willoughby of Ahoskie, and Cecil Willoughby of Roanoke Rapids.

He was predeceased by a brother, Archie Willoughby.

A funeral service will be conducted on Thursday, October 13, 2005, at 11:00 a.m. at Garrett Funeral Home, Ahoskie.

Burial will follow in Ahoskie Cemetery with Masonic Rites.

The family received friends at the funeral home from 7:00 until 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday.

James P. Webb

WINDSOR n James P. Webb, 94, died October 6, 2005 at Bertie Memorial Hospital, Windsor.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at Indian Woods Baptist Church by the Rev. Aaron Lewis. Burial will be in the church cemetery. A wake will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. Friday at Gilliam Funeral Home, Windsor.

Maggie Rascoe

WILLIAMSTON n Maggie Bonds Rascoe, 93, died October 6, 2005 at Martin General Hospital, Williamston.

A funeral will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at St. Paul Church of Christ, Williamston. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery. A wake will be held one hour prior to service at the church. Gilliam Funeral Home, Windsor, is in charge.

James Speller

COLERAIN n James Bernard Speller, 67, a native of Bertie County, died October 9, 2005 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital, Ahoskie.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at Cedar Landing Baptist Church, Windsor, by the Rev. Shelton Barnes. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery, Windsor. Wilder’s Funeral Home, Inc., Aulander, is in charge.

Speller was a retired construction worker from Russo Demolition Co.

Survivors include his wife, Celestine Holley Speller; a daughter, Bettie Peyton of Norfolk, Va.; brothers, Marshall Speller of Windsor, Henry Speller Jr. of New Jersey and Lewis Speller of Brooklyn, NY; sisters, Bernice Harris and Elsie Morris, both of Windsor, Clara Roberson of Greensboro and Willie Mae Speller of Connecticut; three grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

Shirley Simmons

HARRELLSVILLE n Shirley Weaver Simmons, died October 12, 2005 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital, Ahoskie.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Reynolds Funeral Home Chapel, Ahoskie. Burial will be in New Harrellsville Chapel Baptist Church Cemetery.

Mrs. Simmons was a member of New Harrellsville Chapel Baptist Church.

Survivors include one brother, Raymond L. Weaver of Durham; and two sisters, Gloria Reid of Murfreesboro and Nannette Jackson of Harrellsville.

James A. Edwards

MURFREESBORO n James A. Edwards, died October 11, 2005 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital, Ahoskie.

A funeral will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Parker’s Grove Baptist Church, Mapleton, by the Rev. Fernander Temple. Burial will be in Carver Parker Cemetery. Reynolds Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie, is in charge.

Edwards was a member of Parker’s Grove Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Levester Scott Edwards of Murfreesboro; two sons, McCoy Edwards of Murfreesboro and James M. Edwards of Upper Marlboro, MD.; one daughter, Margaret M. Brown of Upper Marlboro; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Deatrice Richardson

NASHVILLE n Deatrice Renee Richardson, 34, died October 6, 2005 at Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston, Mass.

A funeral will be conducted at 12 p.m. Friday at Bread of Life Ministries, Rocky Mount, by the Rev. Arthur Vincent. A visitation will be held from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. Friday at the church. Interment will be in Gardens of Gethsemane, Rocky Mount. H.D. Pope Funeral Home, Rocky Mount, is in charge.
