Madie L. Vaughan

WOODLAND n Madie L. Vaughan, 95, a native of Northampton County, died October 22, 2005 at her residence.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Jerusalem Baptist Church, Woodland, by the Rev. Eddie Vinson. Burial will be in the church cemetery. A viewing will be held from 2 to 8 p.m. Friday. Hertford County Undertakers, Winton, is in charge.

Survivors include three sons, Nathiel Vaughan and Wayne Vaughan, both of Poughkeepsie, NY, and Novell Vaughan of Woodland; four daughters, Willia Scott of Rich Square, Evelyn Johnson of Woodland, Geraldine Mitchell of Washington, D.C., and Joyce Anderson of Virginia Beach, Va.; 15 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.

Clarence Blythe

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. — Clarence Blythe, 76, a native of Hertford County, died October 23, 2005 at Weaver Home Care in Murfreesboro.

Survivors include his wife, Lessie E. Blythe of Philadelphia, Pa.; two daughters, Patricia Blythe and Marthine Blythe, both of Philadelphia; two sons, Alvin Blythe and Tyrone Blythe, both of Philadelphia; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be conducted at 10 a.m. Saturday at Triump Baptist Church, Philadelphia, by the Rev. James S. Hall Jr. Burial will be in Chelten Hills Cemetery, Philadelphia. Ellis Funeral Home, 529 Rising Son Ave., Philadelphia, will be in charge of funeral on Saturday. Hertford County Undertakers, Winton, is in charge.

Irene W. Elliot

WINDSOR n Irene W. Elliot, 71, died October 24, 2005 at Pitt Memorial Hospital, Greenville.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at Sandy Point Baptist Church, Windsor. There will be a walk-in viewing Friday evening from 7 to 8 p.m. Gilliam Funeral Home, Windsor, is in charge.

Oczana A. Davis

ROANOKE RAPIDS n Oczana Ann Davis, 56, died October 23, 2005 at Halifax Regional Medical Center.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at Twilight Baptist Church by the Rev. Danny B. Jones Sr. Burial will be in Crestview Memorial Cemetery, Roanoke Rapids. H.D. Pope Funeral Home, Roanoke Rapids, is in charge.

Tiffany S. Harrell

AHOSKIE n Tiffany Shawnrey Harrell, died October 22, 2005 at Norfolk Sentara Hospital, Norfolk, Va.

A funeral will be conducted at 12:30 p.m. Saturday at Cape Center “R.L. Vann School” Ahoskie, by Evangelist Mike Willingham. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery. Reynolds Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie, is in charge.

Tiffany was a member of Bride of Christ Tabernacle, Ahoskie.

Survivors include her father, Robert Wayne Harrell Sr. of Ahoskie; two brothers, Robert Wayne Harrell Jr. and Emmanuel Lamont Harrell, both of Ahoskie; and her grandmother, Doris Spruill of Ahoskie.

Sharol Harrell

AHOSKIE n Sharol Ray Spruill Harrell, died October 22, 2005.

Mrs. Harrell was a member of Bride of Christ Tabernacle, Ahoskie.

Survivors include her husband, Robert Wayne Harrell Sr. of Ahoskie; two sons, Robert Wayne Harrell Jr. and Emmanuel Lamont Harrell, both of Ahoskie; her mother, Doris Spruill of Ahoskie; two brothers, Terry Spruill of Charlotte and Clifton Spruill; and four sisters, Pattie Green of Baltimore, Md., Catherine Spruill of Maplewood, NJ, Wilma Spruill of Trenton and Emily Spruill of Charlotte.

Dr. Mary Rose Holley

Dr. Mary Rose Holley was born on June 7, 1947, to the late Ruth and Cecil Holley in Merry Hill, North Carolina. She departed this life on Thursday, October 20, 2005 at Mountainside Hospital in Montclair, NJ.

Mary Holley graduated from C.S. Brown High School in Winton, NC in 1967. In her quest for further knowledge she enrolled at St. Augustine’s College in Raleigh, NC where she earned her BA degree in Sociology in 1971. She continued to pursue in the field of Sociology and obtained her Master’s degree in 1973 at Fisk University. In 1978 she received her PhD with a major in Sociology and a minor in Sociology Gerontology from North Texas State University (University of North Texas), Denton, Texas.

Dr. Holley was an Assistant Professor of Sociology at Montclair State College in Upper Montclair, NJ. She achieved numerous accomplishments in the educational field. Some of her major accomplishments include the following: Research Assistant at Urban Observatory of Nashville-Davidson County, Assistant Project Director for Cultural Enrichment in Nashville, Tennessee, Project and Research Assistant at North Texas State University, Teaching Fellow for the Dept. of Sociology at North Texas State University, Associate Professor of Sociology at St. Augustine College, Fulbright Visiting Professor at National University of Lesotho, Roma, South Africa, Professor at Governor’s School on Environment at Stockton State College, Pomona, NJ.

Dr. Holley was an active member of several professional societies: American Sociological Association, Association for Black Sociologists, Eastern Sociological Association, Gerontological Society of American and the National Council of Negro Women (Montclair Chapter).

Due to her compassionate heart, Mary was a constant contributor to various organizations which included the State of NJ Employees’ Charitable Campaign. UNICEF, Montclair Art Museum, United Negro College Fund, United Way of Essex and the American Cancer Society.

Dr. Holley was an active member of St. Paul Baptist Church of Montclair, NJ, where she attended Bible Study regularly as well as taught Sunday School. She was also part of the Youth Education Aid Council.

Mary was a compassionate, giving, thoughtful and intelligent person who will be truly missed by her family, friends, colleagues and students.

Survivors include a sister, Celestine Holley Speller of Colerain, NC; brothers, Cecil I. Holley, Jr. (Hattie) of Garner, NC, Carl Holley (Gloria) of Marshall, Texas, Kenneth Holley (Maxine) of Ahoskie, NC and Gregory Holley (Nicole), of West Germany.

Final services for Dr. Mary Rose Holley will be held on Thursday, October 27, 2005 at 1 p.m. at Zion Hill Baptist Church, Colerain, NC. Interment will follow in Ashland Baptist Church Cemetery, Colerain, NC, with the Rev. Willie J. Best, Jr. officiating.

Michael B. Lambert

MURFREESBORO – Michael Brown Lambert, 52, a native of Detroit, MI, died October 21, 2005 in Pitt County Memorial Hospital.

Lambert was a member of St. Thomas’ Episcopal Church and worked for Homeland Security as an Immigration Adjunct Officer. He was an Air Force veteran of the Vietnam Conflict. He was also a Mason and member of the Rotary Club.

Survivors include his wife, Julie WU Lambert of Murfreesboro; a sister, Barbara Smith of Roswell, Ga.; a brother,

the Rev. W. J. Lambert of Mequon, WI.; his mother, Louise Deputy Logan of Sarasota, FL.; and his father, William J. Lambert of Bloomfield Hills, MI.

A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Thomas’ Episcopal Church, Ahoskie, by the Rev. Jeff Douglas and Rev, W. J. Lambert. Interment will be in Chesapeake Memorial Gardens, 524 Cedar Rd. Chesapeake, Va., at 2:30 p.m. Saturday October 29, 2005. Garrett Funeral Home, Ahoskie, is in charge.

James M. Gresham Jr.

FUQUAY-VARINA n James Morgan “Jim” Gresham Jr., 23, died October 25, 2005 at his home.

A service of remembrance will be conducted at 2 p.m., Thursday at Montlawn Funeral Home, Chapel. The family will receive friends following the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Muscular Dystrophy Association, 3724 National Drive, Suite 113, Raleigh, NC 27612.

Survivors include his parents, Becky and James Gresham; brothers, Robert Gresham and Raynor Gresham, all of Fuquay-Varina; and his maternal grandparents, Billy and Foy Fisher of Pendleton.

Floyd O. Russell

HARRELLSVILLE – Floyd Odvil Russell, 61, a native of Hertford County, died October 24, 2005, in his home.

Russell was a member of Harrellsville United Methodist Church, where he served as Superintendant of Sunday school, church secretary and treasurer.

He was a salesman for W. H. Basnight & Co., Inc.

Survivors include his wife, Kaye Kepley Russell; a son, Martin Jennings Russell of Harrellsville; two sisters, Linda R. Baker of Windsor and Louise R. Simpson of Cofield; and a brother Walter Robert Russell of Washington.

A celebration of life service was conducted Wednesday at Harrellsville United Methodist Church by the Rev. Walter G. Johnston.

Burial was in the church cemetery. Garrett Funeral Home, Ahoskie, was in charge. Memorial donations may be made to Harrellsville United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 66, Harrellsville, NC 27942.

Kathryn Anne M. Hall

AHOSKIE n Kathryn Anne “Kathy” McGonigle Hall, age 50, of Brantley Road, died Wednesday, October 26, 2005, in Roanoke Chowan Hospital.

Mrs. Hall was born in Independence, Missouri and was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Independence and attended Pleasant Plains Baptist Church, Ahoskie.

She was a business entrepreneur and a partner in Terry Hall’s Trucking and Landscaping.

She worked for H & R Block, the City of Wilmington, NC, and performed independent contract work as a medical transcriptionist..

Additionally, she was a Notary Public.

Kathy was an avid crafts lady, and excellent cook and baker.

She nurtured all she knew, was generous to a fault, and was loved by all.

Survivors include her beloved husband, Terry Joel Hall; her mother, Frances Marie McGonigle Reed; a sister, Judy Akers and husband, William “Duke” Akers of Kansas City, MO; a niece, Melinda Kaye-Marie Akers of Kansas City;

her mother-in-law, Pearl Hall of Ahoskie; and her adopted Hall family, Laverne Toliver, Jean Powell, Donna Hall, McClary Hall, Jr. and Ricky Hall, all of Ahoskie, Maxine Dowe of Springfield, VA, Portia Walls of Cary, NC, and Karen Ingram of Manasas, VA.

She was predeceased by her father, Joseph Floyd McGonigle.

A funeral service will be held on Friday, October 28, 2005, at 11:00 a.m. at Garrett Funeral Home, Ahoskie, with the Rev. Raleigh Johnson, officiating.

Burial will follow in Pleasant Plains Baptist Church Cemetery, Ahoskie.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 7:00 until 8:30 p.m. on Thursday and will assemble at the funeral home at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, prior to services.
