HAMPTON, Va. – Allie Walters Murray, 97, of Hampton, VA Virginia was born in Burlington, NC to Allie J. and Melissa Murray.
Allie is survived by his loving and faithful wife, Emmer Smith Murray of Hampton, VA.
He retired as a machinist from Newport News Shipbuilding and Drydock Company after 40 years of service.
He was a charter member of West Hampton Baptist Church, founded in the 1940’s. He served faithfully as a Deacon, Deacon Chairman, Sunday School teacher, Sunday School Director and Finance Chairman. He spent his time diligently visiting and witnessing his faith to the lost, the sick and the hurting with his long-time friend, Charlie Schrum. He also served on the Peninsula Food Agency (H.E.L.P.) for the needy.
He became an active golfer after his retirement and scored a hole in one on two occasions.
Mr. Murray was predeceased by his wife of 53 years, Dellie Swaim Murray; and sisters, Kodell Waddell and Wyona Allen of Burlington. He is survived by his sister, Delois Murray Strickland and husband, Barry, of Greensboro; son, Richard W. Murray and wife, Bettye Jo, of Ahoskie; grandson, John A. Murray and wife, Kathy, and great grandchildren Olivia, Jackson and Mitchell Murray of Annapolis, Md.; granddaughter, Joanna Murray Starr and husband, Edward, and great granddaughter, Kayla Starr of Crofton, MD; his daughter, Amye Murray Stephenson and husband, Larry, of Suffolk, VA; his grandsons, Dr. Jay Warren of Hampton, VA, and Capt. Travis Stephenson (USMC) and wife, Jenny, and great grandson, Carter Finn Stephenson of Richlands, NC.
The family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m. on Thursday, February 2 at Parklawn-Wood Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, February 3, 2012 at West Hampton Baptist Church, 631 Aberdeen Road, Hampton, VA, officiated by the pastor, Dr. Danny Owens.
