CHAPEL HILL – The Bertie High School girl’s basketball players attended the North Carolina Women’s Basketball Elite All-American Camp June 10-12.

The Elite All-American Camp was for the advanced, highly skilled, serious-minded, intense high school player.

The camp helped prepare the top players for their college-level game. Prior experience was required and the girls had the experience by winning the Northeastern Coastal Conference and by participating in the sectionals.

Each player received a Carolina blue and white basketball, a Carolina-style practice uniform, Elite Camp t-shirt and individual picture with University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Coach Sylvia Hatchell.

The girls received instruction from Hatchell as well as current and former Tarheel basketball players at both the Dean Smith Center and Carmichael Auditorium.

Alice Lyons-Bennett, the Lady Falcons’ coach, accompanied her team to the camp and helped work the camp.

&uot;The Bertie girls learned a lot from the UNC-Chapel Hill Coaches, and basketball players as well as high school coaches from North and South Carolina who had won two or more state championships,&uot; Bennett said. &uot;Coach Dorthy Fortune from South Carolina, who had won four championship in five years, and Coach Laurie Calder-Green from North Carolina that had two state championships shared a lot of useful information.&uot;

Attending the camp from Bertie High School were seniors Ashley Berryman, the daughter of Katrina Berryman of Windsor, Jessica Breland, the daughter of Charles Breland of Kelford and Jean Breland of Oak City, Courtney Winborne, the daughter of Joy and James Lee of Aulander, and Tierra Perry, the daughter of Alycia and Ronald Saulsbury of Colerain.

Also at the camp were sophomore Octavia Hill, who is the daughter of Stephanie Drain of Windsor, as well as junior La’Queta Leary, the daughter of Margaret Leary and James Rouson of Windsor and rising freshman Equalia Vines, the daughter of Arthur Vines of Lewiston and Delores Thompson of Roxobel.

Julissa Wright, the daughter of Keshia Rodgers of Windsor, is a rising sophomore who attended the camp.
