WELDON – Who said anything about retirement?

When winding up his career as Deputy Superintendent of Hertford County Public Schools (HCPS), J. Wendell Hall may have thought about fishing and working as a board member for the district.

He may have even considered travel. Lately, it seems his only travel is going from school-to-school in the district he is directing.

Since March of this year, Hall has been Interim Superintendent for Northampton County Schools. He has helped the district through the process of replacing retired Superintendent of Schoosl James Pickens and will remain on board until June 30. That is the day before Dr. Kathi Gibson assumes the role of superintendent.

While Hall may have been planning to take a break, he won’t be getting one. Instead, he has accepted an offer to serve as interim in the district Gibson is leaving – Weldon City Schools.

The Weldon Board of Education agreed at a recent meeting to offer the job to Hall and he reported Tuesday afternoon he has reached an agreement in principle to accept the offer.

&uot;I look forward to working with the Weldon City Schools,&uot; Hall said. &uot;My goal will be to provide stability and leadership to the district and work closely with the Board to reach their goals during this transition time.&uot;

Hall said he had not finalized terms of the agreement which will make him an interim for the fifth time. He has previously served with HCPS (twice), Northampton County Schools and Warren County Schools.

Hall has been successful in each stint as an interim. During his two terms in Hertford County, he helped the district achieve some of the highest scores in the system’s history.

In Warren County, Hall led the district to become one of only five in which every school made Annual Yearly Progress during the first year of the federally mandated No Child Left Behind program.

During his current tenure, Hall has stabilized a difficult situation at Rich Square-Creecy Elementary School and has helped the district at a time in which they lost their superintendent in midyear.

Prior to his retirement, Hall spent seven-plus years as Assistant and then Deputy Superintendent of Hertford County Public Schools. Before that he served with the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction from 1979-1993. He was also a teacher at Robert L. Vann Elementary School in Ahoskie and Red Oak Elementary School in Lawrenceville, Virginia.

Hall graduated from Calvin S. Brown High School in Winton before continuing his education at Elizabeth City State University where he received a Bachelor of Science degree in education. He earned his master’s degree in 1978 at East Carolina University and then received his sixth year degree in administration in 1988.

Hall is currently a member of the Hertford County Board of Education and is a past president of the North Carolina Association of School Administrators. He served on the board of the same organization as well as the Board of Directors for the State Personnel Association.

In addition, Hall was the recipient of the Governor’s Award of Excellence in 1988.

Hall expects to leave Northampton County June 30 and report to work in Weldon City Schools on July 5.
