Rebecca S. Barnes

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – Rebecca Smith Barnes, 50, a native of Sumpter, S.C., died May 31, 2005.

She taught in Murfreesboro, N.C., Washington, D.C., and at the Ghent School in Norfolk. Survivors include her husband, Paul D. Barnes and daughter, Mary Beth Barnes; parents, Marian and J.B. Smith; and her sisters, Cathy Crawford, Camille Smith, Robbins and Laurie Smith.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday in Greenville at Jarvis Memorial United Methodist Church. A local memorial service will be held at a later date. James L. Champion

RICH SQUARE – James Leonard Champion, 76, a resident of Autumn Care Nursing Home since December 1986, passed away April 6, 2005, at Roanoke Chowan Hospital.

He was predeceased by his parents, Ralph Waldo Champion and Helen Simonson Champion.

He is survived by two cousins, Williams F. Simonson, Jr. of 500 Weatherspoon Street, W., Sanford, NC and Kim Simonson Butts of 300 Stoneybrook Drive, Sanford, NC and large host of residents, staff caregivers, employees and friends at Autumn Care Nursing Home who were his extended family and to them was affectionately known as &uot;CHAMP&uot;.

No memorial service is planned. Garrett Funeral Home is in charge.

Leonard Harrell

COFIELD n Leonard Vernest "Buster" Harrell, 92, a native of Hertford County, died June 2, 2005 at Three Rivers Health and Rehabilitation Center, Windsor.

Survivors include two sisters, Lillian Manley of Cofield and Eula Johnson of Portsmouth, Va.; and one brother, William Harrell of Philadelphia, Pa.

A chapel service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday by the Rev. Charlie Carter Jr. Burial will be in Philippi Baptist Church Cemetery. Hertford County Undertakers, Winton, is in charge.
