Grover C. Miller

HARRISONBURG – Grover Cleveland "Bud" Miller, 85, a native of Beulaville, died April 29, 2005, at his home.

Miller moved to Norfolk during World War II. While serving his country in the U.S. Navy.

He retired as vice president of Virginia Beverage Company. Mr. Miller was a member of Coleman Place Presbyterian Church in Norfolk, but attended First Presbyterian Church in Harrisonburg.

Survivors include his wife, Lillian Purdy Miller; daughters, Alicia M. Stocks of Como and Cordelia M. Beasley of Chesapeake; brothers, Gordon and Cecil Miller of Beulaville, and DeWitt Miller of Rose Hill; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday in Sunnyside Presbyterian Home. Memorial contributions may be made to Sunnyside Retirement Community, 3935 Sunnyside Drive, Harrisonburg, VA 22801 or a charity of one’s choice. Kyger Funeral Home, Harrisonburg, is in charge.

Willie T. Daniel

ROANOKE RAPIDS n Willie T. "Tunk" Daniel, 80, died April 30, 2005 at Halifax Regional Medical Center in Roanoke Rapids.

A visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday in the Roanoke Rapids Chapel of H.D. Pope Funeral Home, Inc. Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. on Friday at the funeral home chapel by the Rev. Sally Twine. Interment will be in Crestview Memorial Cemetery.

James W. Barnes

SUNBURY – James Walter &uot;Jimmie&uot; Barnes, 75, a native of Nansemond County, died May 3, 2005, in his home.

Barnes, also worked at Planters Peanuts in Suffolk and Byrum Oil Company in Sunbury. He was a former member of the Gates County Rescue Squad and was a volunteer with Meals on Wheels, a faithful member of the Jimmy’s Bar-B-Que 2 p.m. Tea Time Group and was an active member of Philadelphia United Methodist Church, where he served as Survivors include his wife, Willie White Kitts Barnes; a stepdaughter, Paige Kitts Johnson of Norfolk; and a sister, Maude Baldwin of Virginia Beach.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday in Philadelphia United Methodist Church by the Rev. Jay Helms and the Rev. William Clements. Burial will be in Damascus Christian Church Cemetery. Miller Funeral Home, Gatesville, is in charge. Sarah B. Penny

AHOSKIE n Sarah Brown Harrell Penny, 90, formerly of Colerain, died Saturday, April 30, 2005 in Yadkinville, NC, home of her son, Fletcher.

Mrs. Penny was born in Bertie County on December 11, 1914 and was a member of First Baptist Church and the Woman's Club of Ahoskie.

She was married to T. E. Harrell, who passed away in March of 1966, and later married C. R. Penny who also predeceased her.

Sarah was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother and was most happy when she was cooking, cleaning house or growing prize winning roses.

Survivors include three of her four children, Barbara H. White and husband, James, of Jacksonville, FL, Thomas E. Harrell and wife, Nancy of Colerain, Fletcher V. Harrell and wife, Linda, of Yadkinville, three brothers, Stanly Brown and wife, Lois, of Columbia, SC, Ollie Brown of Ahoskie, and Shirley "Cutt" Brown and wife, Nita, of Colerain; eleven grandchildren, nineteen great grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Sarah was also predeceased by a daughter, Molly H. Raines.

A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Thursday, May 5, 2005 at Garrett Funeral Home, Ahoskie, with the Rev. Dr. Jesse J. Croom, officiating.

Burial will follow in Highland Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 1:00 until 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, prior to services, and other times at the home of Thomas and Nancy Harrell, Colerain.

Allie B. Russell

SEABOARD – Allie B. Russell, 88, died May 2, 2005.

Lee Winslow

GATESVILLE – Elton Lee Winslow Jr., 41, a native of Gates County, died May 2, 2005, in Pitt Memorial Hospital, Greenville.

Winslow was a surveyor with Paul J. Toti Land Surveying. A graduate of Old Dominion University with a B.S. in business administration, he was a life member of Alpha Kappa Psi. He was a member of St. Mary’s Episcopal Church, where he served on the vestry, a member of the Gates County Rural Health Board and the Gates County High School Athletic Booster Club.

Survivors include his wife, Rene Rother Winslow; daughters, Elise Rene Winslow and Elena Margaret Winslow; son, Elton Lee &uot;Trey&uot; Winslow III, all of the home; his mother, Lucy Riddick W. Kors of Virginia Beach; his father, Elton L. Winslow Sr. of Gatesville; and his sister, Robi Winslow Mitchell of Gates.

A funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Thursday in St. Mary’s Episcopal Church by Father Jim McGee. A private family service will follow in the Winslow Family Cemetery in Hobbsville. Clara Mae Benson

CARRSVILLE, Va. – Clara Mae Cutchins Benson, 88, a native of Newsoms, died May 3, 2005 at Courtland Healthcare Center. She was the widow of Jessie Willie Benson.

Mrs. Benson was retired from the housekeeping department of Southampton Memorial Hospital and was a member of Franklin Church of God and its Ladies Auxiliary. Survivors include eight daughters, Beatrice B. Ross of Franklin, Dorothy B. Vaughan of Windsor, Carolyn B. Murphy of Suffolk, Betty B. Raiford of Henrico, Pearl B. Whitehead of Franklin, Shirley B. Ferguson of Franklin, Willie B. Williams of Windsor, Janie B. Ivey of Gates; a son, Jesse W. Benson Jr. of Carrsville; a sister, Anne C. Bess of Newsoms; two brothers, James Cutchins of Zebulon, and Paul Cutchins of Virginia Beach; 33 grandchildren; 42 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at Wright Funeral Home. Burial will be in Southampton Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home and other times at the home of Bea and Ralph Ross, 301 Crescent Drive, Franklin.

David M. Freeman

COLERAIN n David M. Freeman, 80, died April 29, 2005 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital, Ahoskie.

A funeral will be conducted at 12 noon Friday at First Baptist Church of Colerain. Burial will be in the church cemetery. A viewing will be conducted from 6-9 p.m. Thursday at the church. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. The remains will lie in state at the church from 10 a.m. until time of service on Friday. Walson Funeral Home, Elizabeth City, is in charge.

George Cherry

SUFFOLK, Va. n George Cherry, 84, a native of Bertie County, died April 27, 2005 in Portsmouth.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. on Saturday at Zion Hill Baptist Church. Hunter's Funeral Home, Ahoskie, is in charge.

Cherry was a retired saw mill operator for Georgia-Pacific.

Survivors include a brother, Leroy Cherry of Lake Helen, Fla.; and two sisters, Mary Cherry and Ethel Green of Rochester, N.Y.

Adrian M. Puller

AHOSKIE n Adrian Michael Puller, 26, a native of Brynmawr, Pa., died April 29, 2005 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital, Ahoskie.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at First Baptist Church Powellsville, by the Rev. John White. Burial will be in the Lee family cemetery. Hunter's Funeral Home, Ahoskie, is in charge.

Lee was employed with CTDI in shipping and receiving. He was a member of American Legion of Ardmore, Pa.

Survivors include a son, Amonte Puller of Lewiston; a daughter, Amilyah Puller of Powellsville; his parents, Vikki Lee Smith of Ahoskie and Robert Puller Sr. of Detroit, MI; a brother, Robert Puller Jr.; and a sister, Johnita Puller of Detroit.

James D. Bishop

MURFREESBORO n James Delno Bishop, 56, a native of Hertford County, died May 2, 2005 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Nebo Baptist Church by Pastor Robert Holloman. Burial will be in Buena Vista Cemetery, Murfreesboro. Hertford County Undertakers, Winton, is in charge.
