James A. Cherry Sr.

WINDSOR n James A. Cherry Sr., 58, died April 30, 2005 at Pitt Memorial Hospital, Greenville.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at Crossroad's Missionary Church, Windsor. Burial will be in Ryan's Family Cemetery, Windsor. Gilliam Funeral Home, Windsor, is in charge.

Allen L. Williford

DURHAM n Mr. Allen Lee Williford, died May 4, 2005 at Rex Hospital in Raleigh.

Mr. Williford was born and raised in Ahoskie, North Carolina.

He attended the Ahoskie public schools, and earned both his Bachelors degree in engineering, and his Masters degree in civil engineering from NC State University.

Mr. Williford was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church, serving as a deacon, and involved with the Mexico mission team.

He was employed as a consultant engineer with Kimley-Horn Associates in Cary, NC.

Mr. Williford is survived by his wife, Susan Monroe Williford of the home; daughters, Carrie Williford and her husband, Thomas Harris of Roswell, GA, Amanda Williford of Durham, NC; mother, Dorothy Perry Williford of Ahoskie, NC; brother, Eddie Williford of Raleigh, NC; sister, JoAnn Williford of Raleigh, NC; and several nieces & nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, May 7, at Westminster Presbyterian Church.

Officiating will be the Rev. Haywood Holderness.

Graveside services will be held PRIOR to the memorial service at 10:00 a.m. at Markham Memorial Gardens in Durham.

The family received visitors Friday evening from 7-9 p.m. at Howerton & Bryan Funeral Home.

Betty J. Vaughan

MURFREESBORO n Betty Jean Vaughan, 52, a native of Hertford County, died May 4, 2005 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital, Ahoskie.

A funeral will be conducted at 4 p.m. on Saturday at New Haven Baptist Church by the Rev. Lloyd Gatling. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Hertford County Undertakers, Winton, is in charge.

Survivors include her husband, Earl Vaughan of Murfreesboro; children, Darrell Vaughan, LaToya Vaughan, Chenay Vaughan and Jennifer Vaughan, all of Murfreesboro, Trivette Vaughan of Raleigh and Michelle Williams of Norfolk, Va.; her mother, Clarine Faison Lassiter of Murfreesboro; one brother, Otis Lassiter of Lexington; two sisters, Ada Lassiter of Raleigh and Ella Lassiter-Mebane of Angier; and eight grandchildren.

Lucy P. Cooper

WINDSOR n Lucy Etta Parker "Mutt" Cooper, a native of Bertie County, died April 23, 2005. She was the widow of Clinton R. Cooper Sr.

A funeral was conducted Saturday at Sandy Point Baptist Church by the Rev. Sammy Fields. Burial was in the church cemetery. Gilliam Funeral Home was in charge.

Survivors include three daughters, Lucy Grey, Carolyn and Castella, all of Windsor; four sons, Clinton Jr. of Stockton, Md., Charles Sr. of Snowhill, William and Mike, both of Windsor; two sisters, Rosa Mae of Windsor and Meta James of Norfolk, Va.; 17 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

George E. Williams

WINDSOR n George Edward "Stumpy" Williams, died April 28, 2005 at Wake Medical Center, Raleigh.

A funeral was conducted Sunday at St. Luke Missionary Baptist Church by the Rev. Roy Sharpe. Burial was in the Cooper family cemetery. Gilliam Funeral Home was in charge.

Williams was employed with the United States Postal Service in Manhattan.

Survivors include his mother, Sarah C. Williams of the home; one son, George E. Williams Jr. of Windsor; one brother, Kenneth Williams of Cary; and two sisters, Mary W. Harrison of Silver Spring, Md., and Edna W. Brown of Windsor.

MERRY HILL n George Richardson McPherson, 52, died April 28, 2005 at Pitt Memorial Hospital, Greenville.

A funeral was conducted Monday at Oxley Hill Missionary Baptist Church by the Rev. W.J. Best Jr. Burial was in Ashley Baptist Church Cemetery. Gilliam Funeral Home was in charge.

Survivors include his wife, Mary E. McPherson; four daughters, Kendra of Raleigh, Shaquandra, Melissa and Melinda, all of the home; two sons, Kenrie of Lewisburg and Montell of the home; his mother, Kate McPherson of Edenton; five brothers, William Keith McPherson of Norfolk, Va., Benjamin McPherson of Edenton, Herbert McPherson of Edenton, Michael Rayner of Edenton and Ernest Rayner of Edenton; one sister, Margie R. Downing of Edenton; and two grandchildren.
