Nannie G. Vaughan

AHOSKIE — Nannie Godwin Vaughan, 90, of Route 3, died Monday, March 21, 2005 in Britthaven of Wilson.

Mrs. Vaughan was born in Hertford County, a daughter of the late Albert Jackson and Addie Dilday Godwin. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Ahoskie, the Nan Beasley-Martha Milne Sunday School Class and Keenagers, a senior citizens group. Mrs. Vaughan was retired as a sales clerk and seamtress for Belk Tyler of Ahoskie.

Survivors inlude a daughter, Jean V. Wiggs and husband, Ashton, of Wilson; a son, Al Vaughan and wife, Beatrice, of Ahoskie; a sister, Nettie Byrum of Ahoskie; a brother, Charlie Godwin of Ahoskie; three grandchildren, Russell Ashton &uot;Rusty&uot; Wiggs and wife, Lisa, of Greensboro, Julian Quinn Vaughan and wife, Ellen, of Harrellsville, Vincent Lee Vaughan of New York City, NY; three great grandchildren, Alec Ashton Wiggs, Hannah Kaitlin Wiggs and Olivia Grace Vaughan; extended family, Lee and Mercedes Horton and children, Joshua and Kristin of Charlotte and several nieces and nephews. Besides her husband, Julian Wyatt Vaug-han, she was predeceased by a sister, Martha Godwin Dilday and three brothers, Luther Godwin, Leo Godwin and Troy Godwin.

A celebration of life service will be held on Thursday, March 24, 2005, at 3:00 p.m. at Garrett Funeral Home, Ahoskie, with the Rev. Dr. Jesse J. Croom, officiating. Burial will follow in Highland Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 1:30 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. Thursday, prior to services. Memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association, Memorial Program Center, P.O. Box 5216, Glen Eallen, VA, 23058-5216, or to a favorite charity. The family will assemble at the funeral home at 1:30 P. M. Thursday prior to services.

David C. Freeman

ELIZABETH CITY – David C. Freeman Sr., 62, a native of Bertie County, died March 18, 2005, at Albemarle Hospital. Freeman, a graduate of Elizabeth City State University in 1961, was the owner and operator of Walson Funeral Home in Elizabeth City.

Survivors include his wife, Mabel B. Freeman; one son, David C. Freeman Jr.; two daughters, Demetria F. Davis and Monique F. Jones, DVM; his father, David M. Freeman; two brothers, Howard L. Freeman and the Rev. William M. Freeman; and nine grandchildren.

A funeral was conducted Wednesday at Cornerstone Missionary Baptist Church, Elizabeth City. Walson Funeral Home, Elizabeth City, was in charge.

Irma Hilliard

RALEIGH n Irma Elizabeth Harrell Hilliard, a native of Roxobel, died March 16, 2005 at City of Oaks Rehabilitation Center, Raleigh. She was the widow of Richard Alford Hilliard.

Survivors include her son, Richard A. Dick Hilliard, Jr. of Raleigh; daughter, Irma Leah Hilliard of Ft. Lauderdale, FL; sister, Violet Harrell Williams of Ahoskie; a brother, Karl Harrell of Tennessee; nine half-siblings; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren. Mrs. Hilliard served as a Pink Lady at Raleigh Memorial Duke Hospital for many years and also crocheted blankets for cancer patients in hospital.

A memorial service was conducted Tuesday at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home by the Rev. Rev. James Perry. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Amazing Grace Adoptions, 1215 Jones Franklin Road, #202, Raleigh 27606.

Peggy B. Carden

SEMORA n Peggy Joyce Bobbitt Carden, 72, a native of Durham Co., died March 20, 2005, at the Brian Center in Yanceyville.

Mrs. Carden was a homemaker, a retired secretary for Durham Realty, and the manager of The Bootery, in Murfreesboro. She was a member of Concord United Methodist Church and she was very active in the United Methodist Women all of her life.

Survivors include her husband, the Rev. Billy Carden; one son, Michael E. Carden of Reidsville; one daughter, Lisa C. Elliott of Roxboro; and one granddaughter.

A funeral service was conducted Tuesday at the Concord United Methodist Church by the Rev. Randy Blanchard and the Dr. Wallace Kirby. Burial was in Person Memorial Cemetery. John W. Skinner

GATES n John William Skinner, 73, a native of Perquimans County, died March 20, 2005 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital, Ahoskie.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at Stallings Funeral Home Chapel, Gatesville, by Dr. W.M. Sawyer. Burial will be in New Bethel Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery, Hertford. A visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Stallings Memorial Chapel, Hertford. The family will meet at Stallings Funeral Chapel, Gatesville, at 12:30 p.m. and other times the family will be at the home of the deceased.

Survivors include his wife, Vergie Skinner of the home; two daughters, Kathryn Hardy of Edenton and Wanda Skinner of Hertford; two sons, Clarence Skinner of Newport News, Va., and John W. Skinner Jr. of Tyner; stepsons, Earl Norfleet of Hertford, Bennie Eure of Suffolk and Ronnie Eure of Newport News; four sisters, Doris McDonald, Katie McDonald and Annie Topping, all of New York and Harriet Campbell of Florida; one brother, John Henry Skinner of Hertford; and one grandchild.

Tony Leary

GATESVILLE n Tony Leary, 70, died March 18, 2005, at Obici Hospital, Suffolk, Va.

A funeral will be conducted at Lebanon Grove Missionary Baptist Church, Gatesville, by Pastor Michael Williams. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Stallings Funeral Chapel, Gatesville, is in charge.

Leary had retired from Smithfield Packing Company. He was a member of Lebanon Grove Baptist Church, Gatesville.

Survivors include his wife, Shirley R. Leary of the home; two daughters, Sharon Jones and Toni Leary, both of Gatesville; one brother, Pilston Eugene Leary of Gatesville; and a grandson.

Charlie W. Goodman

GATES n Charlie William Goodman, 89, a native of Gates County, died March 18, 2005, at Albemarle Hospital, Elizabeth City. He was the widower of Janie Beatrice Gatling Goodman.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at Union Branch Missionary Baptist Church, Corapeake, by the Rev. N.T. Thomas. Burial will be in the Gatling family cemetery, Sunbury. A visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Stallings Funeral Home Chapel, Gatesville.

Goodman was a member of Union Branch Baptist Church, a mason and a veteran of the Army.

Survivors include one daughter, Julia L. Riddick of Portsmouth, Va.; two sons, Charlie A. Goodman of Hampton and Glendon A. Goodman of Gates; one sister, Ida Saunders of Sunbury; one brother, George L. Goodman of Sunbury; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.

Lillie Wynn

LEWISTON n Lillie Audrey Mitchell Wynn, died March 19, 2005 at her residence.

A funeral will be conducted at 12 noon Friday at Conoconary Baptist Church, Aulander, by the Rev. Alton Edwards. Burial will be in the Wynn family cemetery. Reynolds Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie, is in charge.

Mrs. Wynn was a member of Conoconary Baptist Church, Aulander.

Survivors include one son, Frank W. Wynn Jr. of Lewiston; one daughter, Thelma W. Walton of Lewiston; one sister, Pauline Wynn of Ahoskie; one stepsister, Ruth Mitchell of Newport News, Va.; seven grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Bertha Panton

MILWAUKEE n Bertha Bridgers Panton, 91, a native of Northampton County, died March 19, 2005 at Guardian Care in Ahoskie. She was the widow of Charlie A. Panton.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at Bethany United Methodist Church by the Rev. Sid Collins. Burial will be in Milwaukee Cemetery. Bridgers Funeral Home, Inc., Conway, is in charge.

Mrs. Panton was a homemaker, a member of Bethany United Methodist Church and a member of the Eastern Star.

Survivors include a daughter, Kaye Panton Devita of Baker City, Oregon; a grandson; and two great-grandchildren.

James Squire

PHOENIX, Ariz. n James "Jackie Boy" Squire, formerly of Roanoke Rapids, died March 22, 2005 at Saint Luke's Hospital, Phoenix.

A funeral was conducted Monday at the chapel of H.D. Pope Funeral Home by the Rev.

Melvin Davis. Interment was in Crestview Memorial Cemetery.

James E. Bryant

AULANDER n Mr. James Elton Bryant, age 57, of Aulander, NC, died March 21, 2005 at his home.

Mr. Bryant was born March 15, 1948 in Hertford County, NC, the son of the late James Henry Bryant and Maggie Sue Futrell Bryant. Mr. Bryant worked for many years with the NC Dept. of Correction. At the time of his retirement, he was a Staff Sgt., with the North Carolina National Guard. He also served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War.

Survivors included his children, James Elton "Jamie" Bryant, Jr. and his wife Tina of Conway, NC, Erica Jeannette Bryant of Aulander, NC and her fianc\u00E9, Jason Slaughter and Ethan James Bryant, also of Aulander, NC. His sister, Rita Harrison and her husband David of Murfreesboro, NC; and his brother, Danny Bryant and his wife Wendy of Tampa, Florida; and his granddaughter, Karley Bryant.

Funeral services will be held, Friday, March 25, 2005 at 11 a.m. at Ashley's Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. Bob Skeens and the Rev. Tommy Kiker officiating. Burial will follow at Ashley's Grove Baptist Church Cemetery with military honors.

The family will receive friends at Massey Funeral Home in Aulander, NC, Thursday from 7 until 9 p.m. and other times at the home.

Flowers are welcomed, however memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

George Andrew Wojnar

George Andrew Wojnar (63) died March 14, 2005.

He was the son of the late Frank J. Wojnar and the late Gladys W. Castner and stepson of Robert H. Castner.

He was retired from the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 825, Springfield, N.J.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army's 97th Engineers Battalion. He also served 23 years and was an honorary life member of the Mt. Horeb Vol. Fire Dept. Co. No. 2 of N.J.

By his own description, he was also, a Half Ast. One Row Farmer, in the Ashley's Grove area of Northampton County.

He leaves behind his trusted, dependable and highly valued partner Elaine E. Brown.

He also leaves behind many valued relatives and friends that he felt privileged to have known. He left with good memories of the relatives and friends that died before him.

As per his wishes, there is to be no service or memorials. He wished to be cremated and have a site at a veteran's cemetery.

Catherine E. Williams

POWELLSVILLE n Catherine Elizabeth Williams, 39, a native of Hertford County, died March 21, 2005.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at New Bethany Baptist Church by Pastor William Clark. Burial will be in the Reynolds family cemetery, Winton. Hertford County Undertakers, Winton, is in charge.

Survivors include one son, Deshawn Mizzell of Powellsville; and her sisters and brothers, Juan C. Williams of District Heights, Md., Calvin E. Williams Jr. of Ahoskie, Reginald T. Williams of Winton, Calvert E. Williams of Charlotte, Kenneth W. Williams of Chapel Hill, Yvette W. Flood of Greensboro and Beverly Grant of Waverly, Va.

James B. Williams

AHOSKIE n James Bernard Williams, 52, a native of Hertford County, died March 22, 2005, at his residence.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at Wilder's Funeral Home Chapel, Aulander. Burial will be in the Cherry Family Cemetery, Aulander.

Williams was retired from Davis Vault Co., Ahoskie. He was a member of Greater Wynn's Grove Baptist Church, Colerain.

Dorothy Marshall

AHOSKIE n Dorothy Marshall, died March 21, 2005 at Guardian Care Nursing Home, Ahoskie.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at Reynolds Funeral Home Chapel, Ahoskie. Burial will be in Zion Hill Church Cemetery, Colerain.

Survivors include one brother, Lemuel Wynn of Colerain; and six sisters, Mary Speight of Harrellsville, Thelma Lewis of Windsor, Celia Adams of Portsmouth, Va., Irene McCoy of Hampton, and Janie Walker and Barbara Watson, both of Brooklyn, N.Y.
