WINDSOR – The process is under way for the town of Windsor to get a new commissioner.

Last Thursday the Windsor Board of Commissioners met to discuss the vacancy created when Commissioner Hoyt Cooper, who also served as Mayor Pro-Tempore, resigned following his relocation.

“The board met and appointed a committee to discuss the vacancy and return with a name or names for consideration by the full board,” Windsor Mayor Jim Hoggard said.

The board appointed longtime Commissioner Bob Brown, Commissioner David Overton and Hoggard to serve as the three-member panel.

Hoggard said the three would meet to discuss possible candidates to fill the vacancy today (Tuesday).

“If all goes well we will have a name for the board to consider at our next regular meeting (April 12),” Hoggard said.

Cooper was in the midst of his third term on the board, having been reelected in November of last year. He was the first black person elected to the board and the first to serve as Mayor Pro-Tempore.

He resigned last week upon moving to Winston-Salem.

It is the second time the board has had to deal with a vacancy in recent months.

Commissioner Collins Cooper died in February. Cathy Wilson was appointed earlier this month to fill that vacancy.

Both Wilson and the person appointed to replace Cooper will serve through December of 2013. A special election will be held in November of 2013 to fill the final two years on the two terms.
