‘Barons pound Pirates

GATESVILLE- The Red Barons put on an offensive show before the Homecoming crowd, racking up 572 yards in total offense as Gates County dealt Perquimans a 48-33 loss.

After a scoreless first quarter, Ralphael Eason put the Barons on the board with a five-yard touchdown run, his first of the night.

AJ Newsome’s kick was good to put Gates ahead, 7-0.

Perquimans answered, with quarterback Jon Boyce’s 1-yard run capping a 67-yard, eight play drive.

The extra point tied the score, 7-7.

Four plays later, Eason again found the endzone, breaking up the side to scamper 46 yards for the score.

The extra point gave Gates the 14-7 advantage.

After holding Perquimans to three-and-out, Eason found the end zone again, this time outracing the Pirates defense for the 66-yard score.

Newsome’s kick was good, and the Barons extended their lead, 21-7.

The Pirates weren’t done, as Perquimans had a touchdown called back, but found the endzone again two plays later.

The extra point was good, and Perquimans pulled to within one touchdown, 21-14.

Gates scored again with just over 30 seconds left in the first half when Newsome connected with Aaron Walton for the 31-yard score.

The extra point gave Gates a 28-14 lead going into the half.

Perquimans came out fired up in the third, scoring on their first series when Boyce connected with John Lassiter for a 7-yard touchdown reception. The extra point was short, but the Pirates cut Gates’ lead to eight, 28-20.

Gates capped off a six-play, 57-yard drive as Brandon Riddick ran seven yards for the score.

The extra point failed, giving Gates a 34-20 advantage.

Perquimans fought back as Kendell Ferrebee rushed two yards for the Pirates touchdown.

The kick was good and Perquimans closed to within seven, 34-27.

The Pirates scored with just over eight minutes left in the game, but the extra point kick was short, and Gates held on to a 34-33 lead.

Riddick added two more scores for Gates, a 42-yard run and a 54-yard run.

Walton ran in the conversion run, giving Gates the 48-33 win.

Eason rushed for 282 yards and three touchdowns on 25 carries.

Riddick added 185 yards on 17 carries, including three scores in the Gates victory.

The Red Barons finished the regular season 8-3 overall and 4-2 inside the league.
