Lillian Powell

ROANOKE RAPIDS – Lillian Powell, 69, of Washington, D.C., and formerly of Roanoke Rapids, died July 8, 2004, at Washington Adventist Hospital, Washington.

A funeral was conducted Wednesday at Roanoke Rapids Chapel of H.D. Pope Funeral Home by the Rev. Joseph Battle. Interment was in Crestview Memorial Cemetery, Roanoke Rapids.

Annie Taylor

MERRY HILL – Annie Mae Phelps Taylor, 91, a native of Bertie County, died July 13, 2004. She was the widow of M.H. Taylor Sr.

A graveside funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at Capeharts Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the home of Ann Brooks, 1738 US 17 North, Merry Hill. Walker Funeral Home, Windsor, is in charge.

Mrs. Taylor was a former homemaker and a member of Capeharts Baptist Church.

Survivors include a daughter, Ann T. Brooks of Merry Hill; two sons, M.H. Taylor Jr. of Hampton, Va., and Robert B. Taylor of Merry Hill; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Dr. Thomas Faison

COLUMBIA – Dr. Thomas Faison, a native of Winton, died July 5, 2004.

A graveside military service with military rites will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Greenlawn Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, is in charge.

Faison graduated with a BS in Chemistry from N.C. State College in 1928, MD from the Medical College of Virginia in 1932 and Master of Public Health from Johns Hopkins University in 1939. A 30 year veteran of the U.S. Army, he served in Central Africa, England, France and Germany during WWII and in Korea and Japan during the Korean War.

He served as head of Gorgas Hospital, Panama Canal Zone 1958; Health Director of the Panama Canal Zone 1959-1960; commander of Moncrief Army Medical Hospital at Fort Jackson, S.C. 1960-62 from which he retired as a full Colonel. He was also a consultant to the American Cancer Society 1962-64; staff physician at the S.C. State Department of Mental Health 1964-65; and superintendent of Crafts-Farrow State Mental Hospital 1965-1977. He was also a member of St. Martin’s in the Fields Episcopal Church.

Survivors include his children, Sophie Ann Muse of Raleigh, Donald M. Faison of Aiken and Deborah M. Faison of Charleston; and 10 grandchildren.

Frances E. Reid

PORTSMOUTH, Va. – Frances E. Reid, a native of Corapeake, died July 10, 2004, in her home. She was the widow of Matthew Reid Sr.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday in Third Baptist Church, Portsmouth, by the Rev. Joe B. Fleming. Burial will be in Lincoln Memorial Cemetery, Portsmouth. Corprew Funeral Home, Portsmouth, is in charge.

Mrs. Reid was a member of Third Baptist Church, Portsmouth, where she was a member of the Missionary Society and the Gospel Choir.

Survivors include two daughters, Pamela P. Champ of Portsmouth and Phyllis Renee’ Henderson of Lima, Ohio; two sons, Matthew Reid Jr. and Marc Eric Reid, both of Portsmouth; and seven grandchildren.

Lecky O. Winborne Jr.

AHOSKIE – Lecky O. Winborne Jr., 18, a native of Hertford County, died July 11, 2004, at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital, Ahoskie.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Newsome Grove Baptist Church by the Rev. Richard E. Smallwood. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Hunter’s Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie, is in charge.

Winborne was a student at Hertford County High School and a member of Newsome Grove Baptist Church. He was also a member of the Hertford County Basketball, Track and Football Team.

Survivors include his mother, Beverly Staten of Ahoskie; his father, Lecky Winborne Sr. of Windsor; his grandparents, Malachi and Ruth Staten of Ahoskie; and Mattie Winborne of Ahoskie; and three sisters, Lavonya Staten of Newport News, Va., Sharmaine Lee and Camille Holley, both of Ahoskie.

Margaret Mayhew

EDENTON – Margaret W. Mayhew, 44, died July 11, 2004, at Britthaven Nursing Home, Edenton.

A graveside service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday at Stoney Creek Cemetery, Ahoskie, by the Rev. Robert May. Massey Funeral Home, Aulander, was in charge.
