Ilethia B. Byrd

WINDSOR – Ilethia Byrum Byrd, 91, a native of Bertie County, died June 10, 2004, at Bertie Memorial Hospital. She was the widow of Lonnie James Byrd Sr.

A funeral was conducted Sunday at New Light House Baptist Church by the Rev. J.T. Edwards. Burial was in Edgewood Cemetery. Memorial gifts may be made to the Bertie County Rescue Squad or the New Light House Baptist Church. Walker Funeral Home, Windsor, was in charge.

Mrs. Byrd was a member of New Light House Baptist Church and a homemaker.

Survivors include our daughters, Barbara B. Tadlock of Windsor, Erma B. Ford of Roanoke Rapids, Carolyn B. Williams of Grantsboro and Jean W. Price of Vanceboro; two sons, Lonnie J. Byrd Jr. of Aulander and Edward L. Byrd of Windsor; one brother, Elmer Byrum of Colerain; three sisters, Hilda Byrum of Windsor, Virginia Drewry of Orange Park, Fla., and Virgie Perry of Harrellsville; 16 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Thomas W. Umphlett

EDENTON – Thomas Walter Umphlett, 70, a native of Chowan County, died June 12, 2004, at his home.

A graveside service was conducted Monday at Warwick Baptist Church Cemetery by Dr. Charles Jones. Miller Funeral Home was in charge.

Umphlett was formerly employed with Seabrook, he had retired from the housekeeping dept. of Chowan Hospital. He was a member of Warwick Baptist Church. He was the widower of his first wife, Reba Harrell Umphlett.

Survivors include his wife, Bernice Jenkins Bazemore Umphlett; and a sister, Judith U. Berryman of Hobbsville.

Jean C. Simmons

PORTSMOUTH, Va. – Jean Clarke Simmons, 71, a native of Gates County, died June 10, 2004, in a Portsmouth hospital. She was the widow of James G. Simmons.

A funeral was conducted Monday at Sturtevant Funeral Home by the Rev. Tom Potter. Burial was in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens.

Survivors include a son, James R. Simmons of Portsmouth; and a brother, Preston H. Clarke of Windsor, Va.

Mary Sessoms

AHOSKIE – Mary Sessoms, died June 13, 2004, at Pitt County Memorial Hospital, Greenville.

A funeral will be conducted at New Bethany Baptist Church, Harrellsville, by the Rev. William Clark. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Reynolds Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie, is in charge.

Mrs. Sessoms was a member of New Bethany Baptist Church.

Survivors include two sons, Rickie Sessoms of Durham and Felix Sessoms of Powellsville; two daughters, Sheree Parker of Blackwood, NJ and Robin Deloatch of Washington, D.C.; one sister, Doris Govan of Camden; and six grandchildren.

Robert L. Stokes Jr.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Robert Lee Stokes Jr., died June 10, 2004, at Greater SE Community Hospital.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete. Reynolds Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie, is in charge.

Blannie Bazemore Jr.

LEWISTON – Blannie &uot;Bobby&uot; Bazemore Jr., 76, a native of Bertie County, died June 13, 2004.

A memorial service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Beautiful Zion Baptist Church by the Rev. Eugene Harris. Wilder’s Funeral Home, Inc., Aulander, is in charge.

Bazemore was a retired sawmill worker. He was a member of Beautiful Zion Baptist Church.

Survivors include his children, Minerva Moore of Lewiston, Wendell Bazemore, Kenneth Bazemore and Daniel Bazemore, all of Kelford, Cynthia Spivey of Windsor, Annie Smith of Ayden, Barbara Bazemore and Julia Todd, both of Mitchellsville, Md., Randolph Bazemore and Robert Bazemore, both of Washington and Michael Bazemore and Connie Winston, both of Upper Marlboro, Md.; 22 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Alexander MacMillan

AHOSKIE – Alexander E. MacMillan, 73, a native of Tidewater, Va., died June 13, 2004, at his home.

A private memorial service will be conducted at a later date with his family. Garrett Funeral Home, Ahoskie, is in charge.

MacMillan had been a resident of Hertford County since 1994.

Survivors include his wife, Ann Gibbs MacMillan; children, Timothy L. MacMillan and Herbert E. MacMillan, all of Ahoskie; a brother, Harold MacMillan of Alva, Fla.; and a sister, Ann Manuel of Norfolk.

Ethelean Stephenson

MURFREESBORO – Ethelean &uot;Ann Lois&uot; Stephenson, 74, a native of Hertford County, died June 10, 2004, at DePaul Medical Center, Norfolk,Va.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Nebo Baptist Church, Murfreesboro, by the Rev. Robert Holloman. Burial will be in Carver’s Park Cemetery. Hertford County Undertakers, Winton, is in charge.

Survivors include one daughter, Ethel Scott of Hampton; four sons, Lee Andrew Stephenson of Midlothian, George T. Stephenson and Robert E. Stephenson, both of Murfreesboro and John W. Stephenson of Clifton, N.J.; four sisters, Essie M. Vaughan and Emma Clark, both of Murfreesboro, Margaret Lassiter of Rich Square and Marie Sharpe of Woodland; two brothers, James Lassiter of Pendleton and John Lassiter of Como; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Dorothy Mae Bottoms

MARGARETTSVILLE – Dorothy Mae Bottoms, 73, a native of Northampton County, died June 14, 2004, at her home.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witness, Woodland, by Elder Roy Futrell. Burial will be in the Carver’s Park Cemetery, Murfreesboro. Hertford County Undertakers, Winton, is in charge.

Survivors include eight daughters, Emma Bottoms of Pittsburgh, Pa., Hattie Blythe of Woodland, Marie Lewis of Ahoskie, Dottie Urquhart of Pendleton, Elaine Manley and Annie Harris, both of Conway, Sharon Bottoms of Roanoke Rapids and Gloria Bottoms of Margarettsville; four sons, Ted Bottoms of Pendleton, Rocky Bottoms of Pittsburgh, James C. Bottoms of Margarettsville and Jesse Bottoms of Durham; one brother, J.B. Morris of Margarettsville; two sisters, Mary Harris and Bernice Lloyd, both of Margarettsville; 33 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren.
