WINDSOR – Thirty-two students discovered that the arts are fun when they gathered for a week of learning June 14-18 at Arts Day Camp in Windsor Community Building.

The third annual camp was a project of Bertie County Arts Council and BCAC President Gaynor White of Windsor was leader. Students in grades K-5 met for morning sessions and youth in grades 6 and up met in the afternoon. Both groups met at Livermon Park and Mini-Zoo Friday at lunch for a cookout. Cost of the camp was $50 per child and BCAC granted eight scholarships to students chosen by art teachers at Bertie public schools. Registration was filled for the 2004 camp and students had a waiting list to attend classes.

White was assisted by volunteers Molly Harden and Laney Taylor, as well as several members of the arts council. Sprint is the major sponsor of Arts Camp and this year donated $750, daily snacks and food for the cookout, with Sprint employees donating time and talent to do the cooking. Basnight Building Supply in Windsor also helped with costs of supplies.

Younger children made candles and painted plaques with a crackle finish. Older children worked on a hooked rug to be placed in Bertie Arts Center, completed stained glass projects and made trays with ceramic tile. Both age groups made soap, painted ceramic frames, made throw pillows with their pictures on the front and painted T-shirts, visors, refrigerator magnets and tote bags.

&uot;The children and parents were extremely pleased with camp. Therefore, I feel it was a great success,&uot; White said.

Public notice is given several weeks before the annual camp begins each year so parents can get their children registered. Slots in class are granted on a first-come, first-served basis.
