Charles Copeland Sr.

NORFOLK, Va. – Sgt. First Class Charles Edward Copeland Sr., U.S. Army Reserves retired, 74, a native of Rich Square, died December 18, 2003, in DePaul Medical Center. He was the widower of Nancy Cumbo Copeland.

A graveside service with Army honors was conducted Sunday in Forest Lawn Cemetery with the Rev. Malcolm Massey Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home was in charge. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Lung Association.

Copeland retired from the United States Army Reserves as a sergeant first class and also retired from VDOT as a toll road supervisor after 32 years of service. He was a member of Ocean View Baptist Church and was an Army veteran of Korea.

Survivors include two daughters, Sheila C. Vandevender of Virginia Beach and Susan L. Copeland of Norfolk; two sons, Charles E. Copeland Jr. and Wayne T. Copeland, both of Norfolk; two sisters, Sue Gwaltney and Doris Rickman, both of Norfolk; three grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.

Maggie V. Hicks

SUFFOLK, Va. -Maggie V. Hicks, 75, a native of Jackson, died December 18, 2003, in Maryview Medical Center. She was the widow of Howard L. Hicks Sr.

A funeral was conducted Monday by Pastor Thomas Becker in Redeemer Lutheran Church, Portsmouth. Burial was in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, Chesapeake. Fisher Funeral Home was in charge.

Mrs. Hicks was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church, Portsmouth.

Survivors include a son, Howard L. Hicks Jr. of Richmond; three sisters, Nettie Scales and Sarah Billups, both of Portsmouth and Virdia Battle of Chesapeake; four brothers, Joe Vaughan and Calvin Vaughan, both of Jackson, Eddie Vaughan

and Herbert Vaughan, both of Portsmouth.

Euncie J. Pippins

SUFFOLK, Va. – Eunice Josie Pippins, 80, a native of Wight County, died December 19, 2003. She was the widow of Sherman Roland Pippins Sr.

A funeral was conducted Monday in the R.W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home & Crematory by the Rev. T.A. Powell. Burial was in Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens. Memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association, 360 Southport Circle, Suite 104, Virginia Beach, VA 23452.

Mrs. Pippins was a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church.

Survivors include her daughters, Betty Hedgepeth of Suffolk and Debbie Ivey of Murfreesboro; sons, Sherman Pippins Jr. and Marvin Lee Pippins, both of Suffolk, Richard Alan Pippins of Windsor;; sisters, Merle Brown of Suffolk, Daisy Griffin of Wakefield, Eula Evans of Windsor; and brothers, Joe Harris of Windsor, William Hargrave of Smithfield; 14 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren.

George Coulbourn Sr.

FRANKLIN, Va. – George Irvin Coulbourn Sr., 96, a native of Smithville, died December 18, 2003, in Southampton Memorial Hospital. He was the widower of Anna Cohoon Coulbourn.

A funeral will was conducted Monday at the graveside in Cedar Hill Cemetery by the Rev. Ed Pickup. Memorial donations may be made to the Rotary Polio Plus Program, c/o Rotary International, P.O. Box 75133, Chicago, IL 60675-5133. R.W. Baker &. Co. Funeral Home and Crematory was in charge.

Coulbourn was the retired founder and vice president of Coulbourn Lumber Co. He was the founder of a number of businesses in farming and lumber export and earned the President’s E award for the exporting of lumber.

Survivors include his daughter, Lucy Coulbourn Lange of Seattle, Wash.; a son, George Irvin Coulbourn Jr. of Black Diamond, Wash.; sister, Katherine C. Edwards of Falls Church; brothers, William C. Coulbourn of Hampton Bays, N.Y., Uriah F. Coulbourn of Windsor; grandchildren and a great-grandson.

Dorothy A. Grant

MEBANE – Dorothy Ann Grant, 48, died December 16, 2003.

A funeral was conducted Saturday at Jerusalem Baptist Church, Woodland. Burial was in the Grant family cemetery, Potecasi. Fisher Funeral Parlor, Durham, was in charge.

Johnnie C. Newsome

PORTSMOUTH, Va. – Johnnie C. Newsome, 86, a native of Ahoskie, died December 19, 2003, in Autumn Care of Portsmouth. He was the widower of Catherine E. Newsome.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday in St. John Baptist Church by the Rev. Leon J. Boone. Burial will be in Lincoln Cemetery, Portsmouth. Fisher Funeral Home is in charge.

Newsome retired as a plumber.

Survivors include two daughters, Dorothy Brown and Kathy Hillar; two sons, Johnnie Newsome Jr. and Billy L. Newsome; grandchildren, ad great-grandchildren.

Roger H. Boone

GATESVILLE – Roger Holt Boone, 88, a native of Gates County, died December 21, 2003, in his home.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Gatesville United Methodist Church by the Rev. William Clements. Burial will be in Gatesville Cemetery. Miller Funeral Home, Gatesville, is in charge. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Gatesville United Methodist Church, in care of Mildred Baines, 203 W. Maple St., Gatesville, NC 27938.

Boone was a retired delivery driver for J.H. Conger Oil Co. and was a member of Gatesville United Methodist Church. He had served on the Gatesville Town Council, had served 20 years in the Gatesville Volunteer Fire Dept., was a member of the American Legion, and was the first &uot;Ruritan of the Year&uot; for the Gatesville Ruritan Club. Boone had served his country during World War II with the Army Air Corps.

Survivors include his wife, Lois Ellis Boone; twin daughters, Bess B. Redmond of Asheville and Nell B. Evans of Monroe; his son, Holt Boone of Cary; his sister, Mary Elizabeth Richardson of Powhatan, Va.; his brother, Samuel Boone of Chapel Hill; and six grandchildren.

Wiley Stevenson

WINDSOR – Wiley Stevenson &uot;Steve&uot; Leicester, 51, died December 21, 2003.

A celebration of his life will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Edgewood Cemetery. Evans Funerals & Cremations is in charge.

Jesse Williams

AHOSKIE – Jesse Williams, died December 20, 2003, at Pitt County Memorial Hospital, Greenville.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete. Reynolds Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie, is in charge.

Grover S. Hoggard

WINDSOR – Grover Scott &uot;Boots&uot; Hoggard, 85, a native of Bertie County, died December 21, 2003, at Bertie Memorial Hospital. He was the widower of Annie Louis Langdale Hoggard.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Lawrence Baptist Church by the Rev. J.N. Baggett. Burial will be in Edgewood Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Walker Funeral Home. Memorial gifts may be made to Bertie County Rescue Squad, PO Box 74, Windsor, NC 27983 or to The American Cancer Society.

Hoggard was a retired farmer. He was a member of Lawrence Baptist Church.

Survivors include a daughter, Ann H. Haislip of Windsor; two sons, Don Hoggard of Centreville, Md., and Jack Hoggard of Lincolnton; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Gwladys L. Ley

MURFREESBORO – Gwladys Lucas Ley, 92, late of Kill Devil Hills, and formerly of Great Britain, died December 21, 2003, at Pinewood Manor, Ahoskie.

She was the widow of Max Ley.

Private services will be held at a later date. Garrett Funeral Home will be in charge.

Survivors include two daughters, Jean Burris of Clinton, Tenn., and Patricia Burke of Murfreesboro; a son, Anthony Ley of Hampton, Va.; three sisters, Phyllis Summerfield, Evelyn Smith and Olive Reed, all of Great Britain; 13 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Mary N. Stagg

AHOSKIE – Mary Norman Stagg, 94, a native of Halifax County, died December 21, 2003, at Guardian Care. She was the widow of William J. Stagg.

A graveside service will be conducted at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at Cedarwood Cemetery, Weldon, by the Rev. Sue Owens. Memorial donations may be made to Weldon United Methodist Church, 415 Washington Ave., Weldon, NC 27890. The family will assemble at the cemetery at 11:15 a.m. Wednesday prior to services. Garrett Funeral Home, Ahoskie, is in charge.

Mrs. Stagg was a retired school teacher with the public school system. She was a member of Weldon United Methodist Church, Weldon.

Survivors include three cousins.
