AHOSKIE – Hertford County continued their midseason run Tuesday night.

The Bears had 12 players score as they rolled to their sixth straight Northeastern Coastal Conference victory by downing First Flight High School 79-40.

Petey Boone paced the Bears with 13 points while Antonio Vaughan and Dontez Tyler scored 10 each. Jamie Wentz led First Flight with seven points.

The Bears jumped out to an early 7-2 lead thanks to back-to-back triples off the hands of Dekimis Perry and Boone. First Flight stopped the run with a bucket by Stephen Culpepper, but Vaughan and Jordan Jones hit consecutive buckets after that to push the HCHS lead to 11-3.

The Nighthawks battled back when Wentz buried a three-pointer and Culpepper a hoop separated only by two free throws from Tyler to close the gap to 13-8.

The teams battled nip-and-tuck through the rest of the quarter with the Bears getting a 6-2 run that helped them take a 20-13 lead after one quarter.

Hertford County started the second period well with a Perry three-pointer that was followed quickly by a Jones hoop as the home team extended the lead to 25-13.

Culpepper stopped the early run with a hoop, but the Bears came back with 12 unanswered points to grab a 37-15 lead.

Tyler started the run with a field goal that was followed by a Vaughan hoop. Boone then sandwiched two triples around a Tyler bucket to help Hertford County grab a 22-point edge.

A Max Konstanzer free throw stopped the spurt, but only momentarily as Jones scored again to make it 39-16.

The Nighthawks had a late 5-0 spurt that closed the gap to 20 (41-21) at the intermission.

Scoring started slowly in the third quarter, but Jones was able to spark a 6-2 HCHS run that pushed the Bears ahead 49-25. Vaughan and Perry also scored on the spurt.

The Bears continued to pull away with a 11-3 run to close the quarter. Boone sparked the spurt by hitting three straight free throws. That was followed by scores from Tyler, Derrick Benthall and Michael Morris as Hertford County led 60-28 heading into the final quarter.

There, the Bears cruised to victory with all 12 members of the squad scoring in the game.

HCHS improved to 10-4 overall with the win and 6-2 in the Northeastern Coastal Conference heading into Friday night’s game with league leading Northeastern High School.
