MURFREESBORO – In Tuesday’s meeting of the Murfreesboro Town Council, Town Administrator Molly Eubank brought the council’s attention to a recent setback in the town’s Housing Development project.
The town was awarded a Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) by the Division of Community Assistance (DCA), a section of the North Carolina Department of Commerce, and was scheduled to take effect this past Friday.
Originally, when the town applied for the grant, it was not under a sewer moratorium. However, the state has since imposed the moratorium status causing town officials to explore its options.
&uot;What the moratorium means is that we have reached the maximum number of sewer taps that can be placed on the system,&uot; said Eubank. &uot;This means that the grant that has been allotted to us for construction of new and repairs on existing homes under homes Housing Development /Concentrated Needs Community Development Programs, will be put on hold until we can resolve the issue of expanding our existing sewer plant.
We are hoping that there is a way to retain the grant while we continue to examine possibilities for expanding the existing facility.&uot;
Eubank has written a letter to Joyce Smith of the DCA explaining the town’s predicament in the need for expansion of its existing sewer treatment plant and is currently awaiting a decision from Smith’s supervisor on the issue.
Additional topics included:
Council members approved a $200 contribution to the Hertford County Peace Officers Club for the purpose of a Law Enforcement Memorial to be placed at the Hertford County Law Enforcement Center in honor of those officers who have lost their lives while on duty.
Council approved motion for a public hearing on September 23, 1 p.m. at the Murfreesboro Municipal Building on Broad Street, to discuss the Special Event Permit Application submitted by Chowan College for its Homecoming Parade planned for September 27.
Next meeting is planned for September 23.
