Clarine C. Mebane

WINDSOR – Clarine Cooper Mebane, 98, died July 3, 2003. She was the widow of Simon L. Mebane Sr.

A service of remembrance will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at Cedar Landing Baptist Church, Windsor. Cherry Funeral Home is in charge. A viewing will be held from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Thursday. Interment will be in Hillcrest Cemetery.

Survivors include five adopted daughters, Clara R. Ward and Mary E. Bond, both of Philadelphia, Pa., Cherry W. Cofield of the home, Loretta M. Gibbs of Chesapeake and Felicia M. Allen of Windsor; sons, Daniel C. Mebane and Montie Mebane, both of Windsor; grandchildren; great-grandchildren; and great-great-grandchildren.

Rosa E. Goodman

SUFFOLK, Va. – Rosa Elam Goodman, 74, a native of Gates, died July 5, 2003, in Autumn Care of Suffolk. She was the widow of Charles Elam Sr. and Willie Goodman.

A funeral was conducted Wednesday at New First Baptist Church by the Rev. Lemuel Green. Interment was in Carver Memorial Cemetery. Crocker Funeral Home was in charge.

Mrs. Goodman was a member of New First Baptist Church, Hosier Road, its Sanctuary Choir and the Eastern Star. She retired from P.D. Pruden Vocational Center.

Survivors include a daughter, Harriett Alexander of Portsmouth; three sons, David Gatling of Bayside, N.Y., Charles Elam of Montgomery, Ala., and William Elam of Chesapeake; 11 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchilddren.

Mary D. Pickett

AULANDER – Mary Delois Pickett, 81, a native of Duplin County, died July 7, 2003, at Guardian Care Nursing Home, Ahoskie.

A funeral will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Aulander First Baptist Church, Aulander, by the Rev. Stevie Lawrence. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Wilder’s Funeral Home, Aulander, is in charge.

Mrs. Pickett was a homemaker and a member of Aulander First Baptist Church.

Survivors include a son, Alphonso Jones Sr. of Aulander; one brother, Willie Newkirk of Wallace; seven grandchildren; 16 great-great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

James Thomas

HALIFAX – James Thomas, 80, died July 6, 2003, at Halifax Regional Medical Center.

A viewing will be held on Thursday at 11 a.m. at H.D. Pope Funeral Home, Roanoke Rapids. A funeral service will begin at 12 p.m. by Bishop Geanie Perry. Interment will be in Oakridge Cemetery, Weldon. At the family’s request, in lieu of flowers, please make any donations to the Thomas Fund, in care of H.D. Pope Funeral Home.

Fannie M. Spivey

NEWARK, N.J. – Fannie Marie Spivey, 54, a native of Bertie County, died July 8, 2003, at Beth Israel Medical Center.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at Sandy Point Baptist Church, Windsor. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Wilder’s Funeral Home, Aulander, is in charge.

She was a homemaker and a member of Sandy Point Baptist Church.

Survivors include a son, Reginald Willis of Hampton, Va.; a daughter, Jackie Cooper of Ahoskie; four brothers, Earl Spivey of Woodland, Leroy Spivey of Aulander, Richard Spivey and Johnnie Spivey, both of Ahoskie; three sisters, Francis Askew of Hampton, Margaret Knight of Manhattan, N.Y., and Ella Spivey of Hampton; and four grandchildren.

Faye C. Stephenson

STONE MOUNTAIN, Ga. – Faye Carter Stephenson, 86, a native of Southampton County, Va., died July 4, 2003, at Odyssey Health Care.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday at Mt. Sinai Missionary Baptist Church by the Rev. Robert Richardson. Interment will be in the church cemetery. Hertford County Undertakers, Winton, is in charge.

Survivors include a daughter, Arnicy S. Daniels of Stone Mountain; sisters and brothers, Claude C. Carter of Lancaster, Pa., Willie C. Carter of Murfreesboro, Fannie L. Woods of San Antonio, Texas and Odell Vann of Hampton; one grandchild; and one great-grandchild.

Ethel W. Harcum

SUFFOLK, Va. – Ethel Wright Harcum, 85, a native of Gates County, died July 8, 2003. She was the widow of James Abram Harcum.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at Parr Funeral Home by the Rev. Dolan Talbert. Burial will be in Holland Cemetery. Friends may join the family other times at the residence of Jerry and Judy Harcum at 8504 Southwestern Blvd., Suffolk. Memorial contributions may be made to the Nansemond Suffolk Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 1515, Suffolk, VA 23439.

Mrs. Harcum retired after 33 years as a bookkeeper for the Dutch Market and was a member of Holy Neck United Church of Christ where she attended Ladies Bible class.

Survivors include a son, Jerry A. Harcum of Suffolk; a brother, Alton Wright of Suffolk; four grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Chester McGlohon

AHOSKIE – Chester McGlohon, died July 8, 2003, at Pitt County Memorial Hospital, Greenville.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at New Ahoskie Baptist Church, Ahoskie, by the Rev. Patrick Young. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery. Reynolds Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie, is in charge.

Survivors include his wife, Legolia Peele McGlohon; a son, Howard McGlohon of Ahoskie; two daughters, Brenda Mitchell of Chicago, Ill., and Cynthia Kennedy of Charlotte; two sisters, Louise Revelle and Viola Soloman, both of Ahoskie; and eight grandchildren.
